China's 'artificial sun' shatters nuclear fusion record by generating steady loop of plasma for 1,000 seconds

The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a steady, highly confined loop of plasma — the high-energy fourth state of matter — for 1,066 seconds on Monday (Jan. 20), which more than doubled its previous best of 403 seconds, Chinese state media reported.

Nuclear fusion reactors are nicknamed "artificial suns" because they generate energy in a similar way to the sun

Watched a show about moving the parts of ITER to the location of the unit. Very large, heavy parts on old French roads. Hugh unit.

Will it work? Unknown.

Doncha just LOVE science typists who don’t understand science?

“… scientists have been working on this technology for more than 70 years, and it’s likely not progressing fast enough to be a practical solution to the climate crisis. ”

So, let’s put on our thinking caps here. We already KNOW CO2 is NOT a driver of global warming/climate change.

While nuclear fusion MAY one day replace “fossil” fuels and , say, trees and biomass for the planet’s daily energy requirements to run civilization (industry, transportation, homes, etc.), the net energy produced is EXOTHERMIC and will STILL add HEAT to the atmosphere.

Changing the SOURCE of heat won’t change the amount of heat.

Remember, energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transferred, and NO transfer is 100%. Losses through friction, convection, conduction, radiation to and out of end-use technology (stoves, HVAC, cars, etc) will still add energy into a closed system - the planet.

Econazis will eventually figure this out and distribute, limit, ration, the use of power to those in power (the elitists), and their friends, family, neighbors, etc. same as it’s always been.

Very true, and the Chinese excel in the areas of theoretical physics and abstract mathematics that are critical to research in Fusion and other nuclear processes.

Americans just don't go into these fields because they are very hard and the lucrative jobs don't exist in the post Cold War US anymore.

As one of my Nuclear Physicist colleagues used to say with a big grin -” Fusion is and always shall be the energy source of the future”

My brother, The Co2 levels in the atmosphere have been holding steady at .04%. It is plant food. In fact, plants grow best in an atmosphere approximately double that. Who knows what the levels were like long ago? There used to be forests under Antarctica, so I assume they were higher. Looking at pterodactyls, they were so heavy they couldn’t have flown in the modern atmosphere and it’s been theorized that they would have needed an atmospheric pressure of approximately 2 atm. Very difficult to perform atmospheric archeology so we can only scratch our heads.

Nuclear fusion reactors are nicknamed "artificial suns"

Fusion scientists make up more propaganda than climate scientists. Big money attracts even bigger, smarter liars. These experiments create explosive supernova conditions, not happy warm sunny conditions. Like other speculative nuclear ventures of the past, the first fusion reactor that goes supernova, blasting radioactive contamination all over the place, will be the end of this expensive folly. A retired fusion scientist admitted his field is a dead-end for the foreseeable future. Fusion scientists know that, so dial back their experiments a bit to keep their money train running as long as possible, or at least until retirement. What a waste of genius talent.

Actually, (1) you’re confusing the Antichrist with the false prophet; the only reference to “Antichrist” in the whole bible says that they are numerous and already present at the time of the disciples (2) nothing mentions Europe anywhere in Revelation, among dozens of places, (3) Although it’s a reasonable inference to suppose the bible MEANS Rome, it actually SAYS Babylon. However, if you mean the modern city of Rome, it no longer fits the one description of the Revelation of John, which is the city on seven hills.

The false prophet worships the Beast, who is the Antichrist and yes the woman who rides the beast is actually taken from the story of the rape of Europa. So yes, a 10 nation confederacy of Europe with the head in Rome. A revived roman empire resurrected

An acquaintance spent several weeks in the hospitals this past summer and early fall. He had lots of things to think about. He is always referring to the "best and brightest" as if they are some godlike creations. He once told me Enron only hired Eagles. I know one of the guys they hired, he was no Eagle. After the failure of Enron I remarked the Eagles had crapped the nest.

Anyway, he suggested the reason so many medicos are foreign is that the "best and brightest" are no longer interested in medicine because they can make so much more as investment bankers. It is always about money with him. He had some lately pop-culture designation for the field of the money changers but I can't recall it as I usually quit listening to him at about that point.

I know why so few enter engineering, too hard, even now and pays too little and engineers are usually first fired in a downturn. I had a relatively good career as an engineer and projects manager in the oilfield and survived at least 9 major down cycles before one got me after the first 20 years. I started a company, did well enough and retired in the next major downturn after weathering a few minor ones. Engineering is not a pure science. It is the application of physical principles to economic ends. It is as much business as sums and physics and chemistry.

One of the other sad things about engineering is that in many instances it has not produced better and more reliable products but more complicated and less reliable with lots of needless icing on the basic function that marketing people have convinced the masses that they for some reason need. Cars and heavy equipment both come to mind. One bad connection and you are out of business until some tech can come out to start poking around and replacing boards that will soon no longer be made rendering the article a yard ornament or boat anchor.

“Did it produce more energy than it consumed?”
No.

To be more specific, it produced no energy at all. There was no fusion reaction. The experiment only achieved some control of plasma for 15 minutes, but not a reacting plasma. Per article:

“Reactors like this have never achieved ignition, which is the point at which nuclear fusion creates its own energy and sustains its own reaction, but the new record is a step towards maintaining prolonged, confined plasma loops that future reactors will need to generate electricity.“

Yes we abandoned Fusion but the rest of your post is clipped garbage. There is no Fusion reactor within decades of break even and none likely over the horizon, your post tries to imply a few changes and they could make usable power, total garbage.

//////////
There are about 50 fusion companies that have sprung up worldwide in the last couple of years. Most of them are american. Two of them have signed contracts to deliver electricity via fusion power in 3-5 years.

For all of my lifetime fusion has been 20 years away and always will be.

But something changed in the last couple years. The Chinese are doing well in this field but they are not alone.

“China is raising an army of scientists, mathematicians and engineers. I encourage people to travel to a modern Chinese city at least once. You cannot fathom what they have done until you see it yourself. Massive 10 lame highways, high speed rail everywhere that’s spotless, same for subways.everything is smart as in internet of things. They are not a developing country in their special economic zones they put the EU and most USA cities to shame in infrastructure. Trump is right we need to get off our butts and start modernizing everything or those chicoms will own the 21st century.”

I was there a couple of years ago and I agree with your assessment.

If we don’t get back to meritocracy ASAP, and bury DEI forever, the Chinese will cook our goose.

Make fun all you want ,but anyone who has worked with Chinese engineers and scientists know they are first rate.

One of China's biggest exports has been students. Often these are grad level students studying at some of the best universities in the world, that then go back to China.

China also has the advantage of being to focus on what's important versus worrying about what group may get offended, or if some {insert animal or insect here} will lose it's ancestral home.
