Several Ukrainian army officers have reportedly been arrested and charged with negligence linked to Russia's operation in Ukraine's Kharkiv region last May, which saw Moscow make large gains.
Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) detained two generals and a colonel, according to the news outlet Censor.NET. The details of the charges are not yet clear, but one commander was arrested for not informing the authorities about a mass desertion of troops, Ukrainian outlet Suspilne reported.
The arrests raised questions about whether there is a real attempt to seek justice or a political move underway to deflect the blame for Ukraine's battlefield challenges, which include troop shortages and problems with mobilization. Newsweek contacted the Ukraine's SBI and Censor.NET. for comment.
Ukrainian veteran Viktor Kovalenko told Newsweek that the era of accountability for military officers regarding desertion in their units had begun.
What to Know
Russia's armed forces breached Ukraine's defenses in Kharkiv Oblast on May 10, 2024, prompting an SBI investigation into the security failure, which handed Russia its biggest territorial gains in 18 months.
In the wake of the setback, General Artur Horbenko, commander of the 125th Territorial Defense Brigade, resigned from his post on June 17, 2024.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Yurii Butusov, editor-in-chief of Ukrainian outlet Censor.NET, wrote that Horbenko, his deputy and two other officers could be punished.
Butusov said Colonel Dmitry Ryumshin, the former commander of Ukraine's 155th Mechanized Brigade, had been detained in the city of Chernivtsi, although the details of the charges are not yet known.
Authorities are reportedly also preparing to charge the former commander of the Kharkiv Operational-Tactical Group, Brigadier General Yuriy Halushkin.
In January 2025, Butusov alleged problems within the 155th Mechanized Brigade, such as widespread unauthorized desertions, command breakdowns and weaponry shortages, the New Voice of Ukraine reported.

Uke Nazi Military Commanders chose poorly both in being Uke Nazis and trusting Uke Nazis.
mucusmaxilliary is not amused.
Arrests should have happened months ago.
You really are willing to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian life, aren't you?
The dictator orders his soldiers to attack. The dictator refuses requests to retreat. The dictator enacts legistation that precludes surrender. The dictator arrests commanders after all their men are killed.
These Bandaras Boys are the same as their forefathers from Berlin.
Ignorance knows no bounds with you, does it.
18 hours.
Hey marcus, you said ukraine had taken over 50 percent of Russia and they are rolling through the rest easily.
Did you lie?
You still fighting over there? I mean, you mention Ukraine 20 timess a day so I’m sure you went and are giving all your money to help the government.
I know you are or else you would just be a babbling fraud here :)
And we know you and Z’s followers are anything but that.
BTW, say GOODBYE to launching missiles inside Russia.

And the floggings and half rations will continue until morale improves.
“18 hours.”
Until what? What does this mean?
Trump Vowed to End the Ukraine War Before Taking Office. The War Rages On.
“Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, shortly after we win the presidency, I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine settled,” Mr. Trump vowed in a June rally. “I will get it settled before I even become president,” he said during his televised debate with Vice President Kamala Harris in September. “I will settle Russia-Ukraine while I’m president-elect,” he said again during a podcast in October.
Just over 16 hours left, and the clock is ticking for peace in Ukraine!
My thoughts exactly!!!
I encourage you to continue posts that highlight Trump’s inadequacy, ignorance and/or hypocrisy.
See how it works out for you.
“Ukrainian veteran Viktor Kovalenko told Newsweek that the era of accountability for military officers regarding desertion in their units had begun.”
I’m thinking they never actually existed. We likely were paying the salaries of ghost soldiers. That is why the Ukraine supporters fought so fiercely against an independent audit of the aid.
Good point. Corruption is an ongoing issue in Ukraine. But at least they fight.
Can't say the same for our so-called Afghan "allies" before the government fell apart in '21.
“Can’t say the same for our so-called Afghan “allies” before the government fell apart in ‘21.
Ghost soldiers and the ones that actually existed were likely to shoot our troops in the back. What a waste it all was.
