Winter storm warning issued for 18 states as 'Cora' is set to bury the South in up to 12 inches of snow

A winter storm is forecasted to sweep across a 1,400-mile-long swath of the southern US starting Thursday, burying some states in up to a foot of snow.

The enormous path of the storm, dubbed Cora, spans 18 states from New Mexico to Virginia where the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm watches, warnings, and/or winter weather advisories.

One to six inches of snow could accumulate from central Texas through much of Tennessee and the southern Appalachians over then next two days.

'Should six inches of snow fall in Dallas, it would be in the top-five snowfalls on record,' AccuWeather Senior Director of Forecasting Operations Dan DePodwin said.

But pockets of heavier snowfall up to 12 inches are possible from just north of Dallas to Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as eastern Tennessee and high elevations of western North Carolina, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

Cora's impact could stretch into the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, though storm conditions will be minor in these regions.

Temperatures have plunged well below average across the South, which will allow snow and ice to accumulate Thursday and Friday.

Widespread icing may be heavy enough to cause scattered power outages, as many states in the storm's path are still working to restore electricity in the wake of Winter Storm Blair.

This wintery mess will create dangerous travel conditions across the region Thursday through Friday, including in and around the metro areas of Dallas-Ft. Worth, Little Rock, Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte.

'Persons should delay travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility,' the NWS advised.

Here in NH, generator electrical panels are a thing and we didn't realize it until we were house hunting and looking at real estate listings.

Many pictures on those listings show off the generator panel for hook up during a power outage. Some of them are downright impressive.

Dang, try again......

Messing with the generator is currently a pain.

I had that fully set up at my old house. Had an infeed on the back of the house, an interlock on the main panel, portable generator lived in a little hut under the deck.

I’ve moved and while I have great electric start portable, I have no infrastructure beyond a large supply of extension cords.

I’m working a serious addition for this house that will include a Generac fixed installation.

It’s snow, not fire. It’s on a weekend here. We already have a layer on the ground from the last storm.

Here in Dallas our snow will be gone tomorrow. It will be 10 years before LA begins to look green.

I am in a SW Arkansas town with about a foot of beautiful snow. We had mixed precipitation yesterday, then it got heavy after midnight with big puffy flakes. It looks like a Hallmark movie.

This area gets nasty frozen stuff every year, but a significant snow happens only every 7 years or so. That works out to once or twice during a childhood. While it shuts down normal life for a few days, the memories built today will last forever.

The street outside my window was filled with kids playing in the couple of inches that fell yesterday. They ran with open mouths to catch the big flakes, then threw snowballs with the first slushy fistfuls that would hold together. There were families of little ones playing together and roaming clusters of teenagers. For most, it was the first real snow day.

One guy got his four wheeler out and pulled an inflatable raft behind him like a ski boat. I could hear the engine and squeals of laughter as he went from street to street with fresh kids.

There is a steep hill a few blocks away that was closed off early yesterday. Someone slid in the ditch before the ground was covered. The city just put up barricades and closed it off. So there is a big steep hill with no traffic to safely play on. No one has sleds, but I bought a big swim ring on clearance just for this reason. It is going to be glorious!

This “named” storm fizzled in Central Texas yesterday. Whizzed right on through.

I have lived in Texas for all but the first three years of my life. I have never uttered the words “it is too cold to do anything outside.” I always tell my wife that I need to be running a trap line in the Yukon. I crave cold weather like old people crave warm weather in Florida. The only problem is that it is dark when I get home from work in the winter.

They’ve been hyping this for over a week now... So, my prediction is MAYBE half of what they are forecasting. I’d even put a hard $20 on a 1/4...

The extreme zone shifted during the night. We are now in the middle of the oncoming extreme zone

Snow fall is predicted to be 3 to 31/2 inches.

Calling the storm hype is in it’s self hype

The kids in the hood were sledding in our backyard. It looked like fun. I have to move the cars so the mayor can plow our driveway.

No, no, no. Error, error error.....

The max is 3 1/2 inches, not 31 1/2 inches
