A winter storm is forecasted to sweep across a 1,400-mile-long swath of the southern US starting Thursday, burying some states in up to a foot of snow.
The enormous path of the storm, dubbed Cora, spans 18 states from New Mexico to Virginia where the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm watches, warnings, and/or winter weather advisories.
One to six inches of snow could accumulate from central Texas through much of Tennessee and the southern Appalachians over then next two days.
'Should six inches of snow fall in Dallas, it would be in the top-five snowfalls on record,' AccuWeather Senior Director of Forecasting Operations Dan DePodwin said.
But pockets of heavier snowfall up to 12 inches are possible from just north of Dallas to Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as eastern Tennessee and high elevations of western North Carolina, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.
Cora's impact could stretch into the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, though storm conditions will be minor in these regions.
Temperatures have plunged well below average across the South, which will allow snow and ice to accumulate Thursday and Friday.
Widespread icing may be heavy enough to cause scattered power outages, as many states in the storm's path are still working to restore electricity in the wake of Winter Storm Blair.
This wintery mess will create dangerous travel conditions across the region Thursday through Friday, including in and around the metro areas of Dallas-Ft. Worth, Little Rock, Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte.
'Persons should delay travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility,' the NWS advised.

LA could use some snow about now.
Well, the cold kind. There’s plenty of the other kind there.
I suppose this a sign of God’s wrath against the godless South just as some FReepers are saying about the fires in California. If we’re going to apply a broad brush, we should apply it evenly.
Very few, mostly in Pittsburg, NH and some of VT and ME are open.
It will all melt tomorrow afternoon.
God will heal America if BELIEVERS turn back to Him.
Thing about it is cold weather and snow storms cause crime rates to drop. I hears this a long time ago. Crime actually goes up in hot weather and down in cold.
So really this is a blessing from God.
Variety is the spice of life. I can’t imagine anything more boring than living in Florida, southern California, or Hawaii and having the same weather every day. Same for a beach in the Caribbean.
When do the articles explaining that this is due to global warming… I mean, climate change, one out?
The ski resorts are likely hurting as well.
However, NY isn’t that far away and the lake effect they’ve been getting is going to make for some great conditions.
OTOH, no snow no shoveling.
Opus?
“It will all melt tomorrow afternoon”.
Not with very cold temperatures and close to a foot deep.
I lived in Florida and California. Didn’t miss cold weather for a single minute.
Now I’m in Spokane. Very moderate weather this year. Forecast for the week ahead includes one day with a 40 percent chance of rain, possibly mixed with a little snow early. I don’t getup early, so I don’t care. Will have a nice walk later in the day.
yeaaa....I’m in MA.
I totally get where you are coming from BUT...my mom has a giant driveway and for the past 50 years i am expected to clear it so NO.
2 winters in a row here in Norwood has been practically snow free....a miracle.
I’m hoping for a 3rd..
Vermont and NH can get all the snow they want and i LOVE it otherwise.
The snowmobiles everywhere is pretty awesome.

I live in MA and at the end, have always said the same.\It’s nice to dream about San Diego or Hawaii weather but it must get frigging boring after a while.
I imagine the crime rate rises with the warmer weather as well...
currently it’s 23 degrees out and the wind has been howling for days now.
14 degrees yesterday.
I see you understand snowfall in the South.
We’re ready to hunker down until it all melts. We’re noticeably in the foothills of the Appalachians. Out vehicles will not move until any slick stuff on the roads is gone. I just hope the power doesn’t go out. Messing with the generator is currently a pain.
I guess for some the South is boring, but the ‘spice of life’ for me isn’t different seasons. Getting all bundled and layered up just to go outside does not interest me at all...
Messing with the generator is currently a pain.
*******
Do like the ancestors. Don’t get/have one just
enjoy the current conditions bad or good. A few
days without electricy just eat the frozen foods
before they thaw and throw the rest out.
few of the can goods and clear out the oldies.
