Traffic jams continue to plague urban centers across the United States, leading to lost time, increased costs, and frustration for millions of commuters.
The 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard sheds light on the cities most affected, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced by drivers.
Here are the 10 cities with the worst traffic, according to INRIX:
New York City – The Big Apple leads the nation, with drivers losing countless hours in traffic.
Chicago – The Windy City ranks second, with congestion remaining a major issue.
Los Angeles – LA’s infamous gridlock earns it the third spot.
Boston – Beantown’s historic streets come with modern-day delays.
Philadelphia – The City of Brotherly Love isn’t so loving when it comes to traffic.
Miami – Sunshine and gridlock go hand in hand in South Florida.
Houston – The largest city in Texas makes the list with its sprawling roads.
Atlanta – Southern charm meets bumper-to-bumper frustration.
Washington, DC – Commuters in the nation’s capital face significant delays.
Seattle – The Emerald City rounds out the top 10 with its persistent congestion.
The INRIX report highlights several factors contributing to the worsening traffic, including increased economic activity, urban population growth, and a slower return to remote work than expected.
Traffic congestion not only wastes time but also impacts the environment and the economy, making it a pressing issue for city planners and policymakers.

I remember when Detroit used to have heavy traffic. Back around the 70s or 80s.
Brand new! Yes!
Been waiting for brand new!
Yes!
Hold on, I can’t!
Have to run to the bathroom!
I actually find Houston rather easy to get around in after living in Hong Kong
Yeah, it’s spread out but so what? For the most part the traffic moves. Dallas is actually much worse than Houston.
We stayed right near the Spanish Steps in Rome. So we walked everywhere. Never got in a cab. Had a hired car take us to the airport when we left.
All the hired cars were actually Black Mercedes mini vans. They also were all diesel standard 4speed transmission. Diesel was 1.63 EU per liter.
Houston drivers are aggressive.
They see a four-foot gap in traffic as an opportunity.
A former business partner posited the zero-sum theory of Atlanta construction barrels. This states that the number of construction barrels in the Atlanta area is a constant, they just move them around to different parts of I-285, I-75, I-85, I-20, GA400, I-575, and I-675 periodically.
Dallas?
DC should be higher on the list.
I haven't lived there since 2009, but I thought it would be higher.
I now commute on I-5 & 405 in LA. I can avoid traffic as long as I leave early enough in the morning. Coming home is a mess, though. It still is not as bad as DC.
I looked at the actual website to see where my small town ranked. It was number 656. Phoenix AZ.
Thanks for not moving here.
I have driven and delivered brand new RVs, shuttle buses, and box trucks in all of the top four and more, even during rush hour. Never got a scratch or dent, never had problems with lane changes or major jams. A few white-knuckle moments, for sure.
The trick is to plan ahead, think ahead, look ahead, and always cut some slack. You’ll get there. Most drivers are up against similar angst and will aerated the flow.
As for the slower or more aggressive drivers, consider them part of your own strategy to deal with each one gracefully. It doesn’t always work, but I’m telling you, none of these are like Kuwait. They’re like a dream.
The private car/van drivers were VERY aggressive too.
The guy who took us to the airport drove as fast as he possibly could all the time(80+ mph) on the highway.
I sat in the front passenger seat.
My son and wife sat in back.
I really enjoyed the high speed trains. Especially the one that went 300 KM/hour.
We went to Rome, Florence. Sorrento and then back to Rome. Flew direct on Delta in and out of Rome to Boston.
Still not as crazy as Houston or Atlanta to me
It’s funny we always thought the Jersey drivers were wacky
I got down to the shore one Friday evening
I was amazed at the aggression. My uncle said it’s the business women mostly. Wacko drivers. Puttingg on makeup at 70 MPH
My cousin said the drivers on the garden state
“ya. They learn to drive in the arcade”
Lost Angeles should be pretty good for awhile...half the cars are burned.

Nobody walks in LA.
Governors don’t count, it’s the mayors and I see one R...Miami,
There are other cities that are no joy either....Nashville, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, Denver etc.
Good Lord. If D.C. is ranked #9, I will never venture to the other cities’ highways.
“It still is not as bad as DC.”
DC was laid out in the cow path days.
Chicago is all right as long as you can safely duck and breeze through stop lights without getting caught in cross fire.
