Traffic jams continue to plague urban centers across the United States, leading to lost time, increased costs, and frustration for millions of commuters.

The 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard sheds light on the cities most affected, providing valuable insights into the challenges faced by drivers.

Here are the 10 cities with the worst traffic, according to INRIX:

New York City – The Big Apple leads the nation, with drivers losing countless hours in traffic.

Chicago – The Windy City ranks second, with congestion remaining a major issue.

Los Angeles – LA’s infamous gridlock earns it the third spot.

Boston – Beantown’s historic streets come with modern-day delays.

Philadelphia – The City of Brotherly Love isn’t so loving when it comes to traffic.

Miami – Sunshine and gridlock go hand in hand in South Florida.

Houston – The largest city in Texas makes the list with its sprawling roads.

Atlanta – Southern charm meets bumper-to-bumper frustration.

Washington, DC – Commuters in the nation’s capital face significant delays.

Seattle – The Emerald City rounds out the top 10 with its persistent congestion.

The INRIX report highlights several factors contributing to the worsening traffic, including increased economic activity, urban population growth, and a slower return to remote work than expected.

Traffic congestion not only wastes time but also impacts the environment and the economy, making it a pressing issue for city planners and policymakers.

For more details, explore the full 2024 INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard here.

No

Manhattan and nyc suburban drivers are ten times better than those in Houston which is completely insane. Last time I tried to drive in Atlanta was amazed at the insanity

Road construction in Atlanta is horrible...Driving down I-75 once, I saw a man standing there holding a shovel...Two years later, I came by the same area and the guy was still standing there holding his shovel.....(s)

It’s a different world where I live. It’s worth a comment if there are more than three cars at one time at the 4-way stop two miles up the road. “Sure is a lot of traffic out today”.

If there are six or more cars, then I assume there is an emergency or a major family gathering somewhere in the area.

The rule in Houston is:

  1. A Yellow Light means speed up.

  2. A Red Light means go faster.

  3. A Green Light means stop and look in both directions

I can believe Chicago. I live in Indianapolis and it takes less time to drive to Chicago than it takes to drive from one side of Chicago to the other once I get there.

The sad thing about DC is up until the late 80s or early 90s, the Metro was generally clean, safe, affordable and very efficient so for the most part there was typically no reason to drive into the DC.

Being retired for a very long time [and having commuted for decades in The East] and listening to eastern city radio on weekday mornings in my relatively new deep Flyover Country compound [Our local radio has NO traffic reports...], I am amused daily as I eat my breakfast.

Total schadenfreude.

YMMV

In October my wife and I went to Italy.
Took the train from Rome to Naples.
A driver picked us up and drove out to Sorrento.
The drivers are VERY aggressive. The lanes are narrow. Every car has scraps down the side. Lots of cars are missing their side view mirrors.

Then there are the scooter drivers that drive down the center line veering in and out of the oncoming lane to pass cars/trucks. Traffic is bumper to bumper the whole trip.
Then you enter the tunnel which is about five miles long. One lane in each direction.

My God Rome. The taxi drivers in Rome provide an optional blind fold for your convenience.

I’ve driven in all of the except Philly. The worst was Boston, but this was in 1980-82, right before the Big Dig.

They are called Massholes for a reason...

I grew up on the Long Island expressway

Me too, then I moved upstate NY and now in Jersey. One thing about New Jersey is at least the drivers are some what competent here. 99% chance the slow poke blocking the left lane here has either New York or Pennsylvania plates.

New York Drivers suck. Bottom of the barrel. The worst are NY City and Long Island drivers, who on the Thurway drive 45 mph in the left lane with nobody in front of them. Oh and if you try and go around them on the right, then they will speed up and it becomes a race.

A close second are Virginia drivers, GAWD people, you live here, you know there's nothing around the curve, why do you slam your brakes at every slightest 1 or 2 degree change in direction of the road.

Atlanta drivers suck too, especially at left turn signals, instead of everyone moving in a reasonably spaced out line, the 1st guy goes, while the 2nd guy waits back at the light until the 1st guys makes it all the way, then the 2nd guy goes while the 3rd guy will again sit back waiting for him to make it all the way, then he goes and the forth, etc, etc. You can have a turn signal last 60 or more seconds but only 2 or 3 cars make it. Why? Why do you people do this? Go already..

“ A NASCAR Track is safer than Atlanta’s Beltway...........”

The Long Island expressway sure is

Commuting is about a lot of things

Drive time radio was a thing in NYC a lot was because driving, though congested, was some kind of order. Not great but Atlanta!!
