The South has experienced some pretty abnormal weather in the past few weeks, including snow, ice, and other winter weather that we're just not used to. Some people may say we're overreacting for cancelling school and closing roads because of a few inches of snow, but we really aren't crazy. Here's seven reasons why you shouldn't judge Southerners for freaking out about snow.

1. We literally never get snow in the South

Southern drivers have a disadvantage to us Northerners.

Standard equipment for me is AWD and four good snow tires.

rear wheel drive and worn tires, don’t even bother trying to take on snow.

My first encounter with black ice was in Germany. I was stuck in a traffic jam due to an accident. While completely stopped, a side wind blew me into a bus stop. I have great respect for black ice on the road.

Men. Even in Minneapolis, there are enough locals who forget how to drive in snow season to season, and enough new drivers to make the first few or heavy snows hazardous driving.

No need to bully southerners or even newly arrived Yankees when neither the roads nor attitudes are designed for driving in snow and ice.

The snow shovel was for shoveling out customer’s cars I was working on.

Customers were not going to do it, even explaining before coming out that I need both hood & trunk open and the driver’s window down.

Exactly. They think they’re never going to be in trouble with 4WD, but guess what? They ARE the ones that usually end up in a ditch somewhere.

My favorite snowstorm in Texas. Other places have had more snow, but few had as much fun!

San Antonio 1985 Snowstorm

Snowfall records dating back to 1885 were easily shattered in one weekend. From Friday, Jan. 11 through Sunday, Jan.13, anywhere from one to 14 inches of snow fell over Del Rio, Eagle Pass, and San Antonio all the up into the Austin area. In the Alamo City, a total of 13.5 inches of snow fell while Del Rio received 8.6 inches of snow.

In my youth, I would find a large parking lot and have a blast trick driving on the ice/snow. Nowadays, I’ll find me a safe spot and observe the knuckleheads navigating the roadways. Free entertainment.

Icy roads and bridges are the problem in DFW, not snow.

Pffft. Southerners handle snow like weenies!

Get out there and do donuts! Oh just go in reverse if you have front wheel drive. What are fenders and bumpers for?!

Hat Tip...
Remove airbag fuse first. Too expensive, gets in the way!

there’s definately a difference with those that have been here a long time and new comers. It’s usually immigrants that I’ll see spinning their tires until they are smoking instead of gently rocking the vehicle back and forth.

A fellow programmer, but from up north, told me in about year 2000 that the asphalt is mixed differently up north. Yes there are major differences like if the roads are plowed or sanded or salted up north. But also, according to him, the asphalt here in the south is made more to handle heat and not crack as much in heat, with the downside being that it's more coarse and has more gaps for ice to grab ahold and not let go as easy. Thus, when our roads ice in the south (according to him) the ice stays on the road longer.

Plus, with our humidity the ice on the roads is ice and not dry snow. Thus it's slicker. He said that he moved south and thought, "I'm from up north I can drive on this like it's nothing." Be he said he too had a learning curve to driving on southern icy roads.

My brother in-law from Chicago used to make fun of us until he ended up in a ditch during one of our ice storms.

He gets it now, lol

There was a big snow in 1960 and in 1973. There was a hell of a nasty ice storm around 1992. I was driving home from work and the local radio station announced that there were over 1100 car wrecks and they couldn’t keep up with all of them. The announcer said “Your on your own. Good Luck”.
