The South has experienced some pretty abnormal weather in the past few weeks, including snow, ice, and other winter weather that we're just not used to. Some people may say we're overreacting for cancelling school and closing roads because of a few inches of snow, but we really aren't crazy. Here's seven reasons why you shouldn't judge Southerners for freaking out about snow.
1. We literally never get snow in the South

The light dusting of snow is nice, growing up north dealing with 2 feet of snow is another story.
Well it's not like California with wild fires and earthquakes and prayers for those in southern California.
When I was in 6th grade we had snow in Houston. It was a serious snowfall. Everything shut down and we kids all went out to play in it. It was great.
The feds know the South is impenetrable, military wise, so they will take it out with 2” of snow.
Grow up and embrace da Erf.
Snow happens. It’s fun at times.
the local media goes apoplectic...
They are desperate for viewers so they try to cause panic.
You ought to see the media in Houston or San Antonio when an ice storm is due in.
A ping out to the Texas Ping list, founded by Windflier.
We're busy trying to scrape the ice off our windshields with credit cards.
Humorous article on snowfall in the South!
Another special Texas winter edition for your perusal.
As always, please FReepmail me if you want on or off the Texas Ping list.
Blessings, and stay warm!
As an Albertan, the only real precaution I take is to drive 10km below the speed limit and give yourself about three times the stopping distance.
I was tempted to laugh at southerners in the snow when we moved from Wisconsin to Georgia. However, I quickly figured it made more sense to play along and get to work remote on that rare flurry day in Columbus, GA instead!
As far as #7, southerners who don’t own hats and gloves... Sure they do! Those and the parkas come out when it dips below 50 degrees! It is even worse here in Mesa, Arizona.
Why Judging Others Is NOT OK
Matthew 7:1: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”.
Emphasize mercy and grace: As recipients of God’s grace, we should extend grace to others.
It the irrationality of the if then logical fallacy
Because place X with a lot of snow can mange snow falling then place Y should be able to do the same thing
No. For example, the State of Minnesota spends about $175 million a year on snow removal. If places that get little snow maybe 2-3 times a decade were spending that same amount the taxpayers would rightfully be screaming in rage about waste
So when an abnormal event, like large snow fall in the South, they do not have the trained personal, the same supplies and the same equipment to deal with it
The way the South deal with these snowfalls, on the rare occasions they happen, is we close up for a day, maybe 2, and then it melts and is gone
Order a high quality snowbrush from Amazon.
8. With college football season mostly over we get excited when there’s something else to talk about.
In the winter of 1973, we got three snow storms in February.
This was in Houston.
Especially fund when it start snowing hard around 2pm and you are in the office until 6. Then the 20 mile white knuckle commute bumper to bumper on icy roads praying none of the morons in front of you hit the brake and cause a pile up
I got done once from one of these commute and my entire body hurt. I had been clenching every muscle in my body the whole way home.
Went straight to bed. Was just that exhausted by it.
Proper tires are the most important thing for driving in snow. But those tires wear faster in dry conditions. There is no sense in using snow tires where it only snows once every 20 years. So snowfall in the South will always be a problem for driving. No one has proper tires for it.
"Literally"
They clearly haven’t been on a snowy/icy busy highway with Texans who believe their humongous trucks are impervious to slick roads as they barrel past you at more than the official speed. LOL!
9. Young adults in the south have kids. So if snow causes schools to close, it impacts southerners a lot more than it impacts childless cat ladies in other parts of the country.
