11 Animals That Can Change Sex
Treehugger ^ | 7/3/25 | Sidney Stevens

For Mother Nature, biological sex isn’t always an either-or proposition. Some species come with simultaneously functioning female and male organs. Others change from female to male or vice versa, depending on need or surrounding conditions.

The reasons behind this fluid mobility are varied: Some are natural processes that offer a species reproductive flexibility, while others aren’t so natural, often sparked by rising global temperatures.

Here are 11 creatures that offer a fascinating glimpse into the many ways sex can develop and change.

And not one is a mammal.

There is no such thing as a mammal that can change their sex.

In fact the only one on the list that is a warm blood is the cardinal and I am doubtful of their conclusions on that.

So, let us review.

Sex in Mammals is binary and immutable.

Humans are mammals.

Sex in Humans is binary and immutable.

Get it?

Got it.

Good.

On occasion, activists for the trans-gender crowd will try to utilize this sort of stuff to rationalize the mutilation of children and adolescents. The scientific end of this business was well-treated in an Australian on-line journal called “Quillette” last year; given below is a bit of their discussion:

From the 17 Apr 2024 of the website “Quillette” (which I assume may well be behind a pay wall at this point):

“From Banana Slugs to Human Beings, There Are Just Two Sexes”

An examination of 18 supposedly ‘trans animals’ disproves activist claims that we all live on a non-binary gender ‘spectrum.’

Emma Hilton / Jonathan Kay [the authors]
. . .
[extensive discussion of this topic, including the 18 creatures alluded to above, was presented, followed by the conclusion below]:

Do some creatures change sex? Absolutely. But this isn’t new information. It’s a fact that biologists have known about for a long time.

What is also well-known is that none of these sex-changing creatures are mammals, much less human. Rather, they’re insects, fish, lizards, and marine invertebrates whose biology is different from our own in countless (fascinating) ways.

What’s more, in every single case described above, there are always (at most) just two distinct sexes at play—no matter how those two sexes may switch or combine. One of those sexes is male, a sex associated with gonads that produce sperm (testes); and the other is female, with gonads that produce eggs (ovaries). There’s nothing else on the menu. It’s just M and F.

Daisy, my cat, has exactly zero interest in being a male. She’s the alpha of the house already.

I often wish I’d bought a male instead, they’re nicer cats.

Not a single mammal in the list. All of the animals actually capable of changing sex are fish. Of the land-dwelling animals, the cardinal only mimics a sex change - it's incapable of fulfilling the sex role it takes on. Some snakes are capable of parthenogenesis, but that's not a sex change, and their offspring are genetic clones of the single parent. The sex of lizards and turtles is determined in the egg, based on temperature. And snails and slugs are natural hermaphrodites - no sex change is involved.

The list is a real fail - they could not even identify any non-piscene or non-amphibian animals that actually change sex.

Note that none of these 11 creatures that can change their sex have anything that needs to be lopped off or sewed on in order to do it.

it pleased God to create a few (non-mammalian) species which can switch their species without third-party surgical intervention. It did not please Him to include humans among them.

Do not, especially on a first date, bring up the subject of the flagellation of the hornwort. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. :)

Anyone who saw "Jurassic Park" knows that frogs can change sex...that is why the dinosaurs began to reproduce out of the control of the people running the place (because some frog DNA had been used in cloning the dinosaurs).

In Greek mythology, Teiresias was born male but was turned into a woman, and later turned back into a man. When asked by Zeus and Hera which sex had more pleasure in intercourse, he said the woman, whereupon Hera blinded him, but Zeus gave him the power of prophecy.
