A political war on the Hudson erupted Monday over New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and the MTA’s controversial $9 congestion toll.
The MTA can now begin collecting the first-in-the-nation congestion fee on Sunday, Jan. 5, to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street — following a federal judge’s ruling in Newark.
While Judge Leo Gordon said environmental mitigation concerns on the Jersey side of the Hudson have to be addressed, he chose not to issue a preliminary injunction to block implementation of the toll in his 72-page ruling.
“The decision does not interfere with the program’s scheduled implementation this coming Sunday, January 5,” said MTA chairman Janno Lieber.
Hochul hailed the decision.
“Despite the best efforts of the State of New Jersey trying to thwart New York’s ability to reduce congestion on our streets while making long-overdue investments in public transit, our position has prevailed in court on nearly every issue,” she said in a Monday night statement.
“This is a massive win for commuters in both New York and New Jersey. Now that the judge has issued his ruling, the program will move forward this weekend with a 40 percent reduction in the originally proposed cost of the toll,” she added, noting the originally proposed fee was $15.
But the Garden State claimed the ruling does pump the brakes on the new toll.
“We welcome the court’s ruling today in the congestion pricing lawsuit. Because of New Jersey’s litigation, the judge has ordered a remand, and the MTA therefore cannot proceed with implementing the current congestion pricing proposal on January 5, 2025,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

What causes congestion is many not using the subway because of ineffective law enforcement making it unsafe.
Oh stop whining and just bring a fire extinguisher with you!
NYC needs more Bernie Goetzes and Daniel Penneys.
You won’t get them if you put them thru the legal wringer every time they act.
The state Chamber of Commerce couldn’t have come up with a better strategy to attract businesses to move out of NYC.
just added a new line to the Beatles Tax Man...”Drive too much they’ll tax your seat”.
So the subway is too dangerous.
The car tolls onerous.
So is there really any reason to be in NYC anymore?
Leave.
We last visited in December 2019 or 2018. Wife wanted to go to see the Christmas decorations and markets and such. And it was after her NYC uncle disowned the family for being pro-Trump, so that’s the right time frame.
For a number of reasons it wasn’t the greatest trip. NYC has been seriously downhill since. I can’t imaging why we would go back, at this point. Don’t care about Broadway.
“Will the congestion toll cause congestion? Stay tuned.”
Companies who deliver should decline to deliver below 60th street. Every store, restaurant and residence who order material to support their businesses and life should have to come to Jersey to pick up their products.
Decorations unless traditional no longer look like Christmas.
Spheres and neon colors with no beauty. Just loud. No graces. Tunnels of led lights. Treetrunks wrapped.
Give me one dad’s spotlit plywood Santa waving from roof or yard. Or a creative nativity scene at a neighborhood house.
Traffic studies have shown the toll will increase costs for those who must or choose to drive a motor vehicle in lower Manhattan, but IT WILL NOT REDUCE CONGESTION. The individual personal drivers and the companies who employ drivers who choose or must drive into lower Manhattan will eat the costs and in some instances (delivery costs) pass the costs off to lower Manhattan customers.
The whole thing is a scam, a taking from motor vehicle drivers to pay for the financially failing MTA transit system, a system the drivers don’t use. I consider what they are doing a crime. The MTA is full of waste and corruption and even correcting for that the fares are too low. The pols of New York just cannot admit the truth. They just keep proping up the corrupt wastefull financially failing MTA.
Remember the government wants to force us to use public transit.
Also, they let crime run wild on said public transit, leaving you completely helpless...
I have never wanted to visit or otherwise be in the city of New York City.
I am 63 and I was right never to go there.
I thought New York was complaining not enough people came back after the “pandemic” and revenue and business were suffering. Which is it?
Bkmk
Deep State is cool with that.
