Before the 1989 US invasion, Panama probably was the closest thing to pre-Castro Cuba in the Caribbean. Night clubs, gambling, horse racing, ... heck, even beisbol.
And it all cost about 1/3th what it did in Los Estados Unidos (and the food was cheaper still).
...and a big Panama with a purple hat band...
Saw NRPS at the Halloween Ball on the Plaza at UF in Gainesville FL in ‘77 and that’s what they opened the show with, one of the best shows ever, free too!

In the 60’s I took the round trip train ride Colon to Balboa.
Steam engine and varnished wood passenger cars with windows that opened to let the jungle air flow by.
So crazy but I still think of it as kinda a new song...I mean the Beatles and Dylan had already kind of had their day in the sun, Led Zeppelin was on the rise...

Best duty station ever. Spent a cumulative of 9 years there from ‘87-99, PCS’d and TDY.
Epic fishing, scuba, mtn biking, bird hunting, etc., and, of course, the LBFM’s.
Almost too much fun for a single rabiblanco.
Woulda never left if we weren’t kicked out in ‘99.

OH, man I saw so many great concerts back in the good ole days!! Not all were free but the ones that weren’t were cheap. We saw 6 bands at one time in the Capital Theater in Jersey for next to nothing.
By the time we got there in 1987 it was off limits as unsafe.
Get those troops some Galil Rifles so they will look more dangerous to the enemy, besides that, they will shoot across three countries down there.
Cruised to Panama about 4 years ago. Just saw Atlantic side of canal and country. It is pretty much a shit hole now.
