Starbucks strike spreads to dozens of cities — as 10K baristas walk out on Christmas Eve

The union representing Starbucks baristas said on Tuesday that a strike against the java giant has expanded to more than 300 locations — with about 10,000 coffeehouse workers walking off the job on Christmas Eve.

Baristas in more than 50 cities including New York, Boston, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Seattle and Chicago have walked the picket line since Friday demanding better wages and work conditions.

The extent to which the work stoppage has damaged Starbucks business is unclear.

According to company filings cited by the New York Times, a typical company-owned Starbucks location in the United States generates anywhere between $4,000 and $8,000 during a normal business day.

That number is even higher during the holiday season, according to the Times.

The strike is scheduled to end on Tuesday and workers are due to report to their stores on Christmas Day.

Earlier this week, Starbucks said the disruptions from the strike had no significant impact on its operations because only a small handful of US stores have been impacted.

The Post has sought comment from Starbucks and the union.

Starbucks Workers United, the union which launched the strike, represents employees at more than 500 company-owned stores — which is around 5% of the total number of stores being operated in the US.

Every time we flew..maybe once a year. I indulged myself with a frozen coffee. So delicious, so sweet most certainly so bad for me. Everyone needs an occasional indulgence.
I would have been just as satisfied to pay and push a button. People who try to extort by collective bargaining & strike actions have warn out the tolerance of society. Certainly they have worn out mine. Were that tried on me I’d look for a way to step away. Millions for defense but not a cent for tribute or blackmail.

They better be careful, people will discover they can do without Starbucks.

Homemade is the best! Enjoy your favorite brew at home. No way can I see spending $5 - $10 on a cup of Joe. Ridiculous.

Ah, another union. I hate unions. Where’s my tiny violin with their “not sustainable” job skills?” Maybe, if they could do more than pour a cup of coffee they could flush out a more valuable resume.

Proud to say, I’ve never ordered a $tarbuck$. Somehow, I’ve managed to pour a cup of coffee straight out of our cheapo coffee maker at home every morning, never had to tip a barista (stupid title) and never misgendered anyone in my kitchen.

Adding water and ground coffee to a $10 Wally World is easy enough. Pouring the machine made coffee into a cup and adding a sprinkle of cinnamon and cream isn’t that tasking and you saved enough to pay the rent.

YOU can even buy a timer to start the coffee as you are getting up.

I’ve had 3 Cuisinart’s with keep hot burners, this last one is refurbished, looks new, 12 cups, and only dregs are left as 2 old people finish it off.

Had SB once, as it was in the lobby of the casino for hubs 60 yr HS graduation get together. No hostesses for free coffee were on the floor a 8 AM. NASTY stuff. 2 sips later it was in the trash.

That is not true. It is good honest work for those that do it. A starter job for some. But others top their ability there. And they need to be respected.

All work is honorable.

Correct. One of the reasons why Trump won. He recognizes the hard work done by ordinary Americans.

Kamala Harris is an Elitist who never had to work her way to the top.

Atmosphere from a drive thru window? Why would I want to get dressed, drive the clunker with no heat for an hour to any coffee shop to pay out the nose for a little cup accompanied by a bent spoon while I have to listen to everyone else in the place and all the beeps and jingles of their phones? No way. I can sit in my comfy chair wearing funny fuzzy house shoes all snuggled down with a couple cats sharing a robe, having a big mug of coffee that is 15 steps away from a refill (no tipping $1 for each step) and chit chat with the family and FR.

Thank you.

Not everyone is going to progress. Not a fault. Just who they are.

I worked in an Arctic Circle burger joint in the 1960’s. I was the cook, two girls collected the orders, and distributed them.

You ordered the food, next, ordered food, next, until everyones order was in. I cooked them, and brought them into the warming bin. The girls made the drinks out front.

We were close to the College campus, and the High school campus. It was busy on football and basketball nights, very busy. Nobody wrote down the orders, it was all on memory. We could all add, subtract, multiply and divide in our heads. We could count change without a computer. Aside from preparation, and cleanup, 3 people could handle the rush.

Sometimes, we had 5 people working, and it was usually the owner and his wife pitching in on those festival days, like 4th of July, or a parade.

We made $1.60 to $2.00 per hour depending.

If I were a coffee shop owner, like Starbucks I would fire all the workers, and hire HS and young College students, and if they can’t handle volume of customers, and figure out cost and how to make what is wanted, I would fire them. No union, NO TIPS, suck it up buttercup. Who in the ..F... decided it was protocol to tip a person making you a drink?

You tip those who serve alcohol drinks, because the servers there must be 21, and need the money, like a good waitress in a diner.

Who are professional coffee serves? Losers.

Many coffee makers come with a timer. You can set it the night before, wake up to a fresh cup already made. Heavenly.
