Boris Johnson's allies dream of a Trump-style comeback - but he's not so sure
The Paper ^ | 12/15/24 | Jane Merrick

'The longer I spend away from Westminster, the stronger my belief that you should only get involved if you really think you can be useful,' says Johnson

For Boris Johnson’s allies, there is an alternative history of the past two-and-a-half years of British politics in which he is not toppled from power in July 2022.

In this parallel reality, Johnson puts forward a less market-troubling, but still pro-growth Budget in the autumn of that year and, crucially, successfully defends his Conservative majority in a 2024 election.

Whether this counterfactual timeline would have actually turned out this way, no one will ever know. But it is one which continues to nag away at a group of his political allies who hope that Johnson might at some point return to the Westminster frontline to save the Tory party from potentially another electoral defeat or, more disastrously, being overtaken by Reform as the leading force on the British right.

It is the growing success of Nigel Farage’s party since the general election campaign, which threatens to split the right – together with the astonishing comeback of Donald Trump as US president – that is making Johnson’s allies wistful for their former leader.

Boris who? All kidding aside Johnson was a British CINO(Conservative in name only). Seems like Farage is the one to take the Trump mantle in Britain, and sweep out the fake conservatives.

Discuss and flame away.

Boris Johnson is the Nikki Haley of British politics

there’s nothing “Trump” about him.

Correct, Boris Johnson getting back in power would be a disaster for the UK, in order to save the country, the UK needs to back Reform UK and Nigel Farage, or a leader of the Tory Party needs leadership much stronger than the current log, otherwise the UK is lost.

He’s the “conservatives” answer to Farage and the Reform party? A return to one of the guys who broke the UK? Well, that’s one idea I guess.

Boris started out as unmistakably conservative, then little by little, it appears he has been influenced by his common law wife. Similar to Rupert Murdoch’s sons. Maybe Boris is making too much money from speaking gigs, that he’d rather not be bothered with all the drama of trying to lead England and keep her separated from the ominous and powerful EU.

Boris ain’t coming back. He doesn’t have the support of his party and the electorate came to despise him as well. He would have led the Tories to defeat just as Sunak did because the lies came easily to him.

There’s talk of Elon financing Reform UK Nigel Farage’s party with 100 million dollars, I don’t know if the laws in the UK could prevent foreign financing of political parties

There is a loophole allowing UK registered subsidiary companies (i.e. X ltd) donating to political parties legally. Which some foreigners like George Soros have exploited to donate to anti Brexit campaign groups. I find this ethically dubious, but I also think that our side should play by the same rules they do.

Oh, and it’s always been legal for Commonwealth citizens (such as Elon Musk tenichally is with his South African and Canadian citizenship) to vote in Our elections if they are resident in UK. The uniparty has had no issues with this so I don’t see how they can have the gall to object to Musk donating when they have tolerating foreigners voting in our elections for decades.
