The incident occurred Dec. 9 in Lunenburg County, which is between Richmond and Danville, Virginia’s Department of Wildlife Resources said in a statement.

A hunting group was following the bear when it ran up the tree, the department said. As the group retreated from the tree, a hunter shot the bear. The animal fell onto another hunter [the victim] who was standing about 10 feet (3 meters) from the bottom of the tree.

The department identified the man as Lester C. Harvey, 58, of Phenix, Virginia. A member of the group rendered first aid before Harvey was rushed to two different hospitals.

When is the last time you ate meat or fish?

It struck me as odd that some responses make it sound like hunters were illegally shooting at bears, and nobody seemed to address whether it was hunting season.

No it doesn’t mean much to me. Just marking time on Free Republic.

Now how many of us haven’t had a bear fall on them from a tree? Happens all the time.

And will the tenth paragraph of the story say “...who moved from Florida earlier this year.”

and let’s not forget:

Headline:
RFK Jr says he dumped a dead bear in NYC’s Central Park.
((drove around with the bear in his car.))

But you’re good with this guy being killed? You’re no conservative. No compassion for the dead man, but glad he was killed?

No, they do not care if it was a legal hunt (BTW yes it was) or poachers. Two legs bad, four legs good!

Sadly a bunch of people who have never been outside a carefully structured and protected environment tend to opine from their artificial ivory towers. Weeping sad little tears for the poor wittle (Fill in what ever non human thing they are upset about here) while they are only alive because there are people out on planet reality doing actual work. Yes, they even post on FR.

Bears fearing man is one of the benefits of bear hunting.

Hound hunters often get their first look at a bear after it has been treed. That’s when they determine whether or not it’s a shooter.

I’m a conservative who doesn’t like killing. Are you a bigot that you can’t imagine people who don’t have your exact opinions?

No, we are conservatives who believe in the 2nd. Amendment and the right to hunt, which is the foundation of this country.

If you don't like hunting, then you have two options:

1. Keep your mouth shut and ignore these threads.

2. Voice your opinion and be prepared for all the criticism that is going to come your way......

So stop your whining.

The bear climbed the tree to protect itself,

You're obviously not a hunter, let alone a bear hunter.

You hunt them with dogs, the dogs tree them and you go in and shoot the treed bear........Simple as that and hope the bear didn't take its toll on the dogs before it hit the tree.....

Did they, ‘render aid’ by cutting him in two?

"Who shoots a bear in a tree?"

We raise Treeing Walker Coon Hounds. If you hunt bear with dogs, that's where you WANT the bear - NOT on the ground chewing up your dogs.

Others hunt over bait. They set up bait stumps and trail cameras and THOSE guys shoot bears on the ground. They don't hunt with dogs.
