The man who busted the myth of fake meat
Telegraph - UK ^ | December 16, 2001 | Ed Cumming

“Plant-based diets are in a tough moment,” says Dr Marco Springmann. “Ten years ago there was a lot of excitement about them. But I think during the cost of living crisis many of the start-up companies struggled, because of their high prices.

“Recently it has been framed as a culture issue, associated with wokeness, which is a shame,” he adds. “I try to believe that we are all concerned about preserving our environment and reducing diet-related diseases and stuff. I would hope that people don’t perceive it as a cultural issue. But it is having a tough moment.”

As senior researcher at the University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute, Springmann is tackling one of the most contentious food issues of our time: what alternatives should we embrace to replace meat and dairy sustainably and healthily?

His latest research, a comprehensive study of 24 milk and meat alternatives, found that legumes, such as peas, were a better alternative on cost, emissions and health, than veggie burgers and other highly processed vegetarian and vegan options, although they were better than meat and animal milk.

“Unprocessed legumes such as peas and beans were the clear winner in our assessment,” he says. “They performed well from all perspectives, including nutritional, health, environmental and cost.” Worst of all were the much-vaunted lab-grown meats. His study found that at current costs they were 40,000 per cent more expensive than real meat, with similar emissions and probably similar health impacts.

“The easy takeaway is to go for unprocessed plant-based foods wherever possible,” he continues. “All of the beans did very well. Processed plant-based alternatives did fairly well, just not as well, although they’re still much better than meat and milk. But one of the big downfalls of processed plant-based alternatives is that they are very expensive.

I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying.

I am not against farmers. I am comparing commercial farming operations to cattle ranching environmental impact.

A cattle ranch leaves the land pretty much in a natural state with a diversity of plant and animal life as compared to a commercial farming operation where only one plant is grown and no animal or insect life exists for the most part.

Real meat is a 100% more healthy than their fake meat made with so many chemicals and additives.

I am always amused by the idea of doing away with cattle, because they fart too much. So, we replace cow farts with human farts?

“Recently it has been framed as a culture issue”

He got that part right. It is a culture issue, such as growing a culture in a petri dish. Who wants to eat mold that has been grown artificially?

A couple of things.
1)When I drive out to Colorado every year, I drive through country that shouldn’t be how crops, grazing is the best use of that land.
2) A Iowa cornfield in the summer is teaming with life.
In the soil and above ground. Current farming techniques are very good. Herbicides are applied in only ounces per acre .

To: Tell It Right
And don't forget Acts 10:11-15!

11 And he saw the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great linen sheet let down by the four corners from heaven to the earth:
12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air.
13 And there came a voice to him: Arise, Peter; kill and eat.
14 But Peter said: Far be it from me; for I never did eat any thing that is common and unclean.
15 And the voice spoke to him again the second time: That which God hath cleansed, do not thou call common.

No, it's not called "tofu". Tofu is tofu. Fake meat is made from a laundry list of things that aren't meat (but that cows would eat). At least one brand brags about not using soybeans ...

Here's the ingredients list for "beyond beef" (AKA Cattle Feed)

Ingredients

Water, Yellow Pea Protein*, Avocado Oil, Natural Flavors, Brown Rice Protein, Red Lentil Protein, 2% or less of Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Pea Starch, Potassium Lactate (to preserve freshness), Faba Bean Protein, Apple Extract, Pomegranate Concentrate, Potassium Salt, Spice, Vinegar, Vegetable Juice Color (with Beet).

*Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Contains no peanuts or tree nuts.

And now you know.

They don’t farm that way anymore. Too expensive and reduces yields. No till is the primary method now in the US. Chemicals (herbicide, pesticides and even fertilizers) are expensive so the minimum is used.

And those grazing cattle need to be fed grain to make decent meat

In my experience, grass-fed beef tastes better than grain-fed beef.

Culture is always important, moron. You are a globalist, pi$$ off.

Do you have it within you to debate a person you disagree with using no name calling or insults?

Reminds me of when conservatives debate a leftist and when the leftist is stumped out comes the racist/bigot/phobe language.

Do better.

SO much corn....TOO MUCH corn, actually.

So they can feed the alcohol plants and dig into Uncle Sugar’s pocketbook for unnecessary subsidies.
