“Plant-based diets are in a tough moment,” says Dr Marco Springmann. “Ten years ago there was a lot of excitement about them. But I think during the cost of living crisis many of the start-up companies struggled, because of their high prices.
“Recently it has been framed as a culture issue, associated with wokeness, which is a shame,” he adds. “I try to believe that we are all concerned about preserving our environment and reducing diet-related diseases and stuff. I would hope that people don’t perceive it as a cultural issue. But it is having a tough moment.”
As senior researcher at the University of Oxford’s Environmental Change Institute, Springmann is tackling one of the most contentious food issues of our time: what alternatives should we embrace to replace meat and dairy sustainably and healthily?
His latest research, a comprehensive study of 24 milk and meat alternatives, found that legumes, such as peas, were a better alternative on cost, emissions and health, than veggie burgers and other highly processed vegetarian and vegan options, although they were better than meat and animal milk.
“Unprocessed legumes such as peas and beans were the clear winner in our assessment,” he says. “They performed well from all perspectives, including nutritional, health, environmental and cost.” Worst of all were the much-vaunted lab-grown meats. His study found that at current costs they were 40,000 per cent more expensive than real meat, with similar emissions and probably similar health impacts.
“The easy takeaway is to go for unprocessed plant-based foods wherever possible,” he continues. “All of the beans did very well. Processed plant-based alternatives did fairly well, just not as well, although they’re still much better than meat and milk. But one of the big downfalls of processed plant-based alternatives is that they are very expensive.

“what alternatives should we embrace to replace meat and dairy sustainably and healthily?”
I dunno, how about…meat and dairy? Cows are quite sustainable, and their meat and dairy products are healthy and delicious. Also, it is a stupid suggestion that their emissions cause climate change. Anyone gullible enough to believe that should probably just remain a vegan. Why replace those products? There is not one legitimate reason that I can think of.
what alternatives should WE embrace? speak for yourself kimosabe. we choose “REAL FOOD” over your fakasshit “wannabe food”. gotta admit though...bugs ARE real food to something so there is that.
“ In order to grow anything commercially you have to clear cut 10’s of thousands of acres and then plough the ground down about 2 feet killing every living thing there in the process then you plant one particular crop and then spray it with chemicals to kill any living thing that might want to eat it and then every once in a while you harvest all of it and start over.”
Dude .
That’s not how it works.
Farmers are good stewards of the land.
The soil is well taken care and full of life.
And those grazing cattle need to be fed grain to make decent meat
On the first day of panic food buying during Covid, I was at Costco before opening and filled a cart with just food. Which I’ve never done before or since. For us and our son and his girlfriend.
That afternoon, I went to Kroger for a few fill in items. The place was picked clean of fresh meat, bread, veggies, dairy. But I was able to get my fill in items, or decent alternatives.
Wandering through the store, I came across an end cap coffin cooler. Beyond Meat and similar stuff. Chock full. Even in those weird early Covid panic times, nobody wanted that crap. I wish I had taken a picture.
It’s interesting when Joe Rogan talks about that stuff. He can’t slam it enough. I’ve never heard RFKJr talk about it, but I have to assume he’s similar.
interesting that peas start life in a pod and that’s where the woke want us to end ours. nice catch by the way. only made better if it is whirled peas.
The “Save the Earth” people are so concerned about cattle farts that they want any cattle left to have “fart bags” placed on their rear ends....

“A senior researcher at the University of Oxford”
probably shouldn’t have read any further than that ... but i did ... and guess what? ... unprocessed food is better than processed food! ... who woulda guessed? ... well, i guess a senior researcher at the University of Oxford would guess ...
which reminds me of the old adage: “how much wood could a senior researcher at the University of Oxford chuck if a senior researcher at the University of Oxford could chuck wood?”
“And those grazing cattle need to be fed grain to make decent meat”
Nope. Nothing wrong with beef that never goes to a feedlot. Has less marbling but still tastes fine and still good for us.
You need to take a drive through the midwest where all the commercial crops are grown...
literally 10’s of thousands of acres of nothing but one crop all the way to the horizon for hours as you drive. No trees, nothing but the same crop for hundreds of miles.
“ Nope. Nothing wrong with beef that never goes to a feedlot. Has less marbling but still tastes fine and still good for us.”
Great that works for you.
But most people want grain fed. Plus we need grain fed to produce the amount of meat that the world needs.
“ You need to take a drive through the midwest where all the commercial crops are grown...”
I live in the Midwest and own farmland.
We take great care of the land.
I had some drainage tile installed 3 falls ago
Had earthworms in that soil down 4-5 feet.
If you want to see true beauty , drive through Iowa in mid June when the landscape is lush green with even fields of corn and soybeans .
