The pain in my father's eyes is a sort of memory seared so thoroughly that I will never forget it.
There he was, aged 41, in the back of a police cruiser as I stand outside looking back at him, myself frozen in time. His sharp, deep blue eyes were not onlooking some boyish mishap of mine or expressing a sense of fatherly pride.
He sat there, handcuffed, utterly defeated by life.
Only moments earlier, on a cold, damp January 2007 day along the hills of East Tennessee, my father and I hastily packed whatever personal belongings we could salvage out of our recently foreclosed house.
After taking a bad loan and not consistently holding jobs, he had fallen well behind on mortgage payments. Despite episodes of sacrificing payments for water, power, or gas, the money had run out, and no lender was interested in assisting.

I read the article. He’s very worried about the future of the democrat party, and what it must do to fix itself.
FSCK the democrat party. To HELL with the democrat party.
It needs to die, miserably, and be consigned to the dustbin of history.
The Republicans have a huge opportunity.
I believe that most people now see the Republicans as the party of the working man.
But that won’t last if we don’t actually support the working man.
I think Trump is on the right track with smaller government, less regulation, tariffs, and re-shoring manufacturing. But we also need to keep an eye on wages — they’ve been flat for decades and plenty of people with “real jobs” can’t afford to rent an apartment, or buy a house, or get married, or have kids. It’s a real problem.
The old-fashioned view of the Republicans was that they only cared about the business owner — the chamber of commerce. As long as the guy who signs the pay checks is doing OK, that’s enough. Well, if we want to help the working man, we have to find ways to get more wealth into the hands of the people who work for a living.
Why in the world would he look to the Democratic party for his future?
I read it too, found it interesting. Must of inherited his inability to troubleshoot what is wrong.
The fault was mine for making the wrong career choices, but no one, no man, should have to go through what I went through. I got hit square in the face with how cruel the world could be and it has shaped my existence ever since.
So while the content of this article is from the viewpoint of a concerned democrat, let's remember that people from both parties have gone through much the same ordeal as this person did. Show some compassion.
No sympathy from me.. you are responsible for your decisions and future. It’s not mine or anyone else’s problem. Only you are accountable for you.
My wife and I have a spare mobile home on our property that we use infrequently. We live in another one on the same property.
I read stories like this, locally, and want to reach out and help. But the laws that permit tenants to camp out and not pay rent prevent us from doing so.
Ideally we’d like to rent to an elderly couple but from what we’ve read we will pretty much lose complete control over the property.
So we don’t
DECENT EDUCATION TO PRODUCE DECENT WORK VALUE FOR the EMPLOYER HAS BEEN EVEN FLATTER FOR AGES.
I WILL NEVER PAY a WAGE OF ANY KIND FOR “WORK” THEY CANNOT PERFORM.
What is always missed in these anecdotes that invite “class warfare” are natural endowments that are priceless yet free. Envy, jealousy, and striving are a natural result of neither knowing nor caring about the bigger picture, namely where you came from and where you are going as a creature under the hand of Almighty God. Worth comes from Him. So does contentment with meager means.
Things can always get worse or better. In any case, the old saying, “Count your blessings” may seem trite but it is worth doing, no matter your status socially or financially.
There are people I have compassion for; not many, but some.
When I got pregnant with our second child, we moved to only my husband’s medical insurance. I confirmed several times what our out-of-pocket exposure was since I knew every one of my pregnancies was high risk. Every time I was assured that after we met our $6K family deductible, they would cover the rest 100%.
It wasn’t until after my daughter was born via emergency c-section and 12 days in the NICU that the insurance person told me they would cover 100% of the bills they deemed reasonable and customary. Well, my friend, that is a far cry from 100% of all bills like I was repeatedly told before.
Our initial share, after insurance, was $67,000. That was just the start.
Medical debt almost destroyed us.
It took a decade to climb out of that hole. For years, we had less than $1K in savings.
Folks who are working hard but get blind-sided by medical debt or wrecked by things beyond their control will have my sympathy. Folks who gamble, do drugs, drink, trash their marriage, spend recklessly, will not.
The folks in NC who didn’t carry flood insurance because a flood hadn’t happened in 500 years and lost it all have my sympathy.
The spouses of the first responders who died on duty and are scraping by on one income have my sympathy.
The people who were permanently disabled by drunken idiots have my sympathy.
Not everyone who struggles does so because they are stupid.
Especially when they care more about foreigners than citizens?!
It sounds like dad had some problems that aren’t mentioned.
You have just said what we are all thinking.
You make a good point. Conservatives are not immune from job and financial catastrophes. I am sorry for all that your family and you dealt with; I hope things are much more comfortable now.
Ditto. I come from what would today be considered extreme poverty.
From 14 to "retirement" at 60, I found being willing to do anything, especially jobs others were unwilling or unable to do put food on the table.
Being willing to learn anything required to do any job and build a business still doing what others wouldn't or couldn't kept life from being boring and made life better.
Being willing to travel to wherever necessary helped too.
I so agree, it takes discernment.
And we are all stupid occasionally.
I just don’t like to subsidize repeated wicked decisions.
This is why health insurance companies are so hated. This is why when their CEO gets gunned down on a sidewalk a lot of us shrug and say, "Well..."
they did!! they suckered you into voting for them, then they screwed you!! The same thing theyve been doing to you for years!! But dont woory, more democrats will be along shortly to make you more promises!!
I am sorry you got served a crap sandwich on crap toast. I trust your life has taken a better turn.
