Better than holograms: A new 3-D projection into thin air (an explanation for the "drones"?)
Phys.org ^ | January 24, 2018 | Seth Borenstein

One of the enduring sci-fi moments of the big screen—R2-D2 beaming a 3-D image of Princess Leia into thin air in "Star Wars"—is closer to reality thanks to the smallest of screens: dust-like particles.

Scientists have figured out how to manipulate nearly unseen specks in the air and use them to create 3-D images that are more realistic and clearer than holograms, according to a study in Wednesday's journal Nature . The study's lead author, Daniel Smalley, said the new technology is "printing something in space, just erasing it very quickly."

This article was written in 2018, I wonder how far the technology has advanced in the years since.

I'm leaning towards the idea that these "drones" are actually very sophisticated holograms. They often tend to be described as "floating" when they're not making some kind of direct motion, and they don't seem to actually DO anything besides look ominous in the sky. It seems more like a presentation, than an invasion.

It's the sort of thing producers of a movie about "killer drones" would do to gin up publicity, using Elon-level technology.

Such "projections" would have no heat signature, and I doubt they would be visible to radar.

Food for thought, maybe.

2018 - today is probably at least a threefold increase in sophistication. At the very least and possibly more, depending on how much was invested.

I’m not convinced but I am open to the idea.

I'd go with that possibility...Okay...so my guess would be college techies....who Musk would probably hire.

I'm betting that Musk has thoughts on these already...

Could be some of Elon’s resident geniuses messing around after hours. :)

Let’s say the drones are sophisticated holographic.

What is creating the sound?

The sound could be a simple psy-op. The sound doesn't have to come from the image. You could for example play an ear-splitting recording of a freight train rumble through a couple of massive, well-hidden Bose speakers in the vicinity, and everyone would naturally think the racket was coming from the drones.

Most of the drones are hoax, illusions and real civilian aircraft.

Twitter has now made GROK free to use. I laughed out loud at some of the stuff it created.

Technology is getting scary.

Visuals projected from drones themselves?

Someone postulated that on an earlier thread, that there could be three or four actual drones equipped with a technology allowing them to project tens or hundreds of drone images.

An unfortunate truth, Sister. Merry Christmas in spite of it! :)

I appreciate your efforts, but even the R2D2 hologram was obviously fake and less than 2 feet away.

I can, of course, be wrong but I don’t believe there is any kind of convincing projected hologram. The closest thing I can think of is a “real image” created by a concave mirror. This can create an image that people would swear looks real - but only about 2 inches away.

Give the article a read. It was written in 2018. As FReeper Jonty30 posted, “2018 - today is probably at least a threefold increase in sophistication. At the very least and possibly more, depending on how much was invested.”

If these were actual drones then they should show up on radar, of which there would be any number in the eastern seaboard flight corridor. That would be info that FAA or DOD would have. If these were 3d projections there would be nothing on radar. The images would, I think, probably not be very stable well defined images.
