San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell refused to enter Thursday’s game against the Rams, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Campbell was spotted heading into the locker room during the third quarter of the 12-6 home loss. When reporters asked Shanahan about this, he replied, “He said he didn’t want to play today.”
The coach clarified that this conversation happened in the third quarter, when Campbell was asked to come in for Dre Greenlaw, who was dealing with Achilles fatigue and subbed out of the game. Shanahan added that this was the first time in his career that a player had quit on him in the middle of the game.
A clearly stunned press corps continued to pepper Shanahan with questions about this incident. One reporter asked what the coach needs to do to make sure he doesn’t lose anyone else in the locker room, and Shanahan replied firmly.
“Haven’t lost anybody,” Shanahan said. “That's somebody who doesn't want to play football anymore, it's pretty simple. I think our team and myself, we know how we feel about that, so I don't think we need to talk about him anymore.”
When the topic of Campbell’s desertion came up in linebacker Fred Warner’s presser, the team captain said he wanted to keep things “in-house” and did not offer a comment on the situation, even when he was asked a second time about it. That was the opposite of what cornerback Charvarius Ward told reporters in the locker room.
“I mean he a professional, he been playing for a long time,” Ward said of the 31-year-old. “I mean if he didn’t wanna play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. They could have told me that before the game. I feel like that was some sucker s—t that he did.

....Achilles fatigue....
Hmmm. OSHA condition requiring cessation of on field work.
Should have fired that asshole right in front of the whole team after the game.
The ask if there is anyone else and fire them also.
They sign a contract. If they cant handle the terms of the contract then to hell with them.
If he was “unable” to play after the first quarter he would still get a game check. Deserting may impact that last check. Strange. By deserting after rosters had been submitted he deprived his team of a substitute. I am sure the contract clearly handles this case. Pretty sure he will be cut and not claimed.
I could be wrong, but I don’t think we cavalierly shoot soldiers because they disobey an order. There are definitely consequences — but getting instantly shot by a sergeant seems an unlikely one. On the other hand, I can see huge levels of fragging of officers if they seem “toxic” to someone.
> The world wouldn’t have suffered under Nazism and Communism if a bunch of folks had had that attitude in 1916. <
I had to think about that for a minute. Yeah, you’re right.
A quote from Hermann Goering (Hitler’s right-hand man):
“Naturally, the common people don’t want war ... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.”
The guy was channeling Bartleby the Scrivener.
...Campbell was asked to come in for Dre Greenlaw, who was dealing with Achilles fatigue...
Campbell didn’t have it.................
Another Kapernick?
“...Charvarius Ward told reporters in the locker room, ‘I mean he a professional, he been playing for a long time...’”
Yeah, they speak like “professionals”.
Perhaps he had a spiritual experience and felt that he needed a new direction in his life.
I’m sure the tough gruff kneelers of the National Fag League can tough it out.
Does he want to get paid?
Kudos to them because it's nobody's business except the team's.
I remember back in 2013, Michigan State Spartan's senior linebacker Max Bullough was suspended by the team for the Rose Bowl game against the Stanford Cardinals for violating team rules.
To this day, nobody knows what he did to deserve the suspension.
He wants to spend more time with family who was waiting in the lockeroom.
The 49ers defense played their hearts out, despite many injuries, and several playing hurt. They limited a team to 12 points that had just dropped 44 on the Bills. And this shit was causing drama and morale destruction on the sidelines for 2 quarters. Good chance it cost them the game and their season.
“I mean he a professional, he been playing for a long time,” Ward said of the 31-year-old. “I mean if he didn’t wanna play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. They could have told me that before the game. I feel like that was some sucker s—t that he did.

I’m glad somebody be a professional. Lucky for me. I understand Ebonics so I kinda understand what was just said here
That seemed more of a psychotic break, and his increasingly bizarre behavior and downfall in the months thereafter kind of proved that. AB could have ended up in the top 5 all time passers, but went insane instead.
He wrote “Grown men throwing tantrums left and right because Trump beat the Hoodoo woman.”
You cannot deny that. His behavior is certainly no different than the Trump Derangement lunatics. Maybe he wasn’t motivated by Trump Derangement, but the symptoms and behaviors are the same. It’s the zeitgeist.
“Get in the game!”
I would prefer not to.
