Losing Syria Is A 'Huge Slap In The Face' For Russia
Radio Free Europe ^ | 12/8/2024 | Michael Scollon, Frud Bezhan

When Vladimir Putin took the reins of power in a post-Soviet Russia in shambles a quarter-century ago, he immediately set about restoring Moscow's status as a global power.

It took 15 years, but Russia heralded its military intervention in the Syrian civil war as proof of its return as a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

Moscow leveraged that image to expand its influence throughout the Middle East and beyond as a counterweight to the West.

Now, the fall of the government of President Bashar al-Assad, a key ally of Moscow, has dealt a serious blow to Russia's great-power ambitions.

-snip-

Assad's ouster represents not only a reputational hit to Russia but likely a major strategic setback.

Syria is home to two major Russia military installations: an air base in Hmeimim and a naval base in Tartus. The latter is Russia's only warm-water naval base outside the former Soviet Union and provides Moscow access to the Mediterranean Sea.

He never cared about them. He doesn’t care about Christians in Russia either, and he executes the ones in Ukraine.

I know nothing of Russia’s interest in Syria except that they have been allies since Assad’s father. I believe the take down of Assad was orchestrated at least in large part by the US, to increase instability in the Middle East before Trump takes office.

Your comment pretty much indicates that you don’t understand where Russia and Iran were in this war. They won’t stay because the people that won, were bombing and killing the Russians two days ago. There isn’t much of a chance that they are allowed to stay.

Well you finally said the silent part out loud. You guys are Russian agents—or at least agents for “Russia First.”

What are you doing in America?

A world without a benevolent superpower will descend into chaos. This is not to say that the superpower should get involved in wars and the resolution of every dispute but its presence as a powerful force and a force for good has a stabilizing effect. Picture Trump 2017-2021. Contrary to what the Left says a bipolar world or a multipolar world is not a good thing. We had a bipolar world during the Cold War and the world was a very dangerous place then.

“The Russians do not care about the country of Syria, nor do they care about the people of Syria. They care about their naval bases at Latakia and Tartus. That is all.”

The Israelis should say that the naval base was taken over by ISIS and that’s why they had to destroy it. That would leave Russia SOL.

It’s a signal for every Russian vassal state that now is the time to revolt.

Putin ran away like a coward and abandoned the Christians in Syria.
—————
Biden ran away like a coward and abandoned the Christians ( and those loyal to the US ) in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, we lost hundreds of billions of taxpayers money, billions of arms given away to Islamists.

That is what super powers do. The mid east is a “ cup of trembling”, right up to “ the End”.

“the gas pipeline”

This is the big reason WHY Turkey has been supporting this civil war for so many years.
Qatar has the gas. Europe needs a new supplier. Especially since that pipeline up in the Baltic no longer exits. Qatar wants to sell it to Europe. Turkey wants a piece of the action. The pipeline needs to cross Syria. Russia did not want the competition.

Hush Wacky One. You Neocons have done more to damage America than Putin could ever hope for. As Trump said some time ago, “wouldn’t it be nice if we could all get along” ? Now take your Russia hate and peddle it elsewhere.

>>>>Anyone who thinks the new players will be an improvement is crazy. All bad, old and new.<<<<

Exactly.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham originated in 2011 as an offshoot of the Nusra Front, the official al-Qaida affiliate in Syria. The group was initially recognized for its combat effectiveness and its commitment to global jihadist ideology.

The Nusra Front cut ties with al-Qaida in 2016 and adopted the new name Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, which means “Front for the Conquest of the Levant.”

The following year, it merged with several other factions in the Syrian war to become Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or the “Organization for the Liberation of the Levant.”

Despite these changes, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s core ideology continues to be rooted in jihadism, with the primary objective of overthrowing the Assad government and establishing Islamic rule in Syria.
