Kremlin Says to Discuss Russian Bases With Syria's New Rulers

The Kremlin said on Monday that it was too early to say what the future would hold for Russia's military bases in Syria, adding that it would be the subject of discussion with the new rulers in Damascus.

After a lightning advance of a militia alliance spearheaded by Hayat al-Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a former al-Qaeda affiliate, Bashar al-Assad fled to Russia, raising questions about two strategically-important Russian military facilities in Syria.

Asked about the future of the bases, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "It's premature to talk about it yet."

"This is all a subject for discussion with those who will be in power in Syria," Peskov said, adding that there was "extreme instability" in the country.

"Of course, everything is being done now that is necessary and everything that is possible in order to get in touch with those who can deal with security. And, of course, our military is also taking all necessary precautions," Peskov said.

Russia's Hmeimim airbase in Syria's Latakia province a naval facility at Tartous on the coast.

The Tartous facility is Russia's only Mediterranean repair and replenishment hub, and Moscow has used Syria as a staging post to fly its military contractors in and out of Africa.

Unless Assad is sitting in a Syrian prison, no Russian base will be sited in Syria.

Assad is in Russia.

We don't know the powers that be right now.

Where are the usuals screaming propaganda, curious😎

It will be interesting to see what happens
First the loss of Syria is certainly egg on Putins face
Loss of some highly technical equipment like radars could prove useful if west can get hands on them, but more importantly, Syria was a way point to Africa and the only port Russia had in the Mediterranean

With these gone at least for now their operations in Africa are in trouble and the wealth they got from there as well.

But what may turn out to be their biggest mistake going forward is admitting Assad is in Russia. Would have been better if they had allowed the “he died in plane crash” narrative. If Russia is forced to turn over Assad to get bases back that will really be a black eye .
And if I were Assad I wouldn’t be smiling and be staying away from windows

Since Mother Russia’s cupboard is bare and she has no money to pay the rent, re occupation of the lost Syrian bases is unlikely.

Before, She ostensibly provided air defense capability and weapons in lieu of money. However since all the air defenses were shown over and over to be worthless, the new Syrian government won’t be fooled again.

The Russian naval presence in the Med is a thing of the past.

Russia has no more claim to the bases it abandoned than the US had to the bases that Biden abandoned in Afghanistan. It seems to me that some country like Saudi Arabia, or even Trump’s USA should start the bidding for them. The Art of the Deal might win.

--- "We don't know the powers that be right now."

The text's "...too early to say what the future would hold" and "premature to talk" becomes in the title of the article: "Kremlin Says to Discuss Russian Bases With Syria's New Rulers."

But that is not the title of the article as hot-linked, when one actually looks. It is "Putin Made Decision to Grant Assad Asylum in Russia, Kremlin Says."

See how that works?

You are correct: "We don't know the powers that be right now."

--- "Where are the usuals screaming propaganda, curious😎"

Another rhyme for the day:

The usuals are 'screaming,'
For so it is alleged;
Not 'writing' in a comment,
A verb far less hard-edged.

The 'usuals' is a basket,
"Deplorable" and grouped,
Because this world is simple,
And 'usuals' are always duped.

'The usuals are screaming'
Is editorial in itself,
Placing contrary voices
Upon the "usual' shelf.

The world is halved, so simply,
No more complex than that.
No more than us and them,
That's the simplest caveat.

The USA and Israel should make an offer for these Russian bases. The new Jihadist rulers need the money. And this naval base would help protect Israels natural gas rigs out in the Mediterranean.
