When Vladimir Putin took the reins of power in a post-Soviet Russia in shambles a quarter-century ago, he immediately set about restoring Moscow's status as a global power.
It took 15 years, but Russia heralded its military intervention in the Syrian civil war as proof of its return as a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.
Moscow leveraged that image to expand its influence throughout the Middle East and beyond as a counterweight to the West.
Now, the fall of the government of President Bashar al-Assad, a key ally of Moscow, has dealt a serious blow to Russia's great-power ambitions.
-snip-
Assad's ouster represents not only a reputational hit to Russia but likely a major strategic setback.
Syria is home to two major Russia military installations: an air base in Hmeimim and a naval base in Tartus. The latter is Russia's only warm-water naval base outside the former Soviet Union and provides Moscow access to the Mediterranean Sea.

Here is what a huge slap in the face is. Anyone who thinks something good happened has a screw loose.

I grew up in the Cold War era with two superpowers competing in many places.
The world today is totally different. Nobody ought to be playing superpower. It’s a multi-polar world and it’s dangerous. We should try very hard not to get involved.
Putin ran away like a coward and abandoned the Christians in Syria.
America First. Russia First. Neocons Last
The Russians do not care about the country of Syria, nor do they care about the people of Syria. They care about their naval bases at Latakia and Tartus. That is all.
The (well deserved and smart) attacks by the USA and Israel in Syria will give the new terrorist regime a reason to keep the Russians in place.
This will be good as the Russians will serve as a counterbalance to Turkey and the more extreme Islamic influences.
Tell Putin to go back to Syria and evacuate the Christians he abandoned.
Correct.

I think Iran is the loser here, unless I got these mooslime sects mixed up and they’re really on the same team. But I don’t think they are. I read Iran had 30-50 billion (thanks Joe!) tied up supporting Assad.
América first AND Russia first? That’s like worshipping satan and working to be saved to go to heaven.
I don’t have the hate for Russia or it’s people that Neocons have, but you dig in and enjoy!
Syria was home to extensive and utterly useless Russian air defense systems traded for the rent on air and naval bases.
The world learned that all that crap Russia pawned off on Assad was just that, crap.
The cream of the Iranian military leadership in Syria was systematically destroyed by the IAF. Russian troops deployed very recently to the Golan, left as soon as IDF tanks and troops showed up across the border. Russian fighters took to the air but ceased flying when buzzed by the IAF.
In Russia everybody knew that failed, drunk, and otherwise worthless officers, failed in Ukraine, were sent to Syria to hide out and maybe be rehabilitated.
Putin has supported his ally. The world is complicated. In recent years, the US State Department and CIA has been the behind the scenes puppeteer toppling governments it just didn’t like and replacing them with obedient fools, like Zelensky. In Ukraine, this US puppeteering has cost the lives of nearly 1 million Ukrainians who had no chance to win from the beginning.
The US is the country that really needs a “slap in the face” to get it to stop meddling and to do the work of defending its own border, getting its own financial house in order, restore respect for law and order, and stop pissing on the people who are productive and giving a free ride to bureaucrats and welfare types who don’t do a single productive thing.

(((PING!)))
To be added to the zeeper follies pinglist, ping me bro... we need laughter!
Russia was in Syria to have a base in the Med, outside the Black Sea access controlled by Turkey.
Russia was in Syria to insure the gas pipeline across Syria to Europe was never completed.
Russia has now lost all reason for being in Syria
Anyone who thinks the new players will be an improvement is crazy. All bad, old and new.
