In the world of cheap drones, Skydio was the great American hope. Its autonomous flying machines gave the U.S. defense and police agencies an alternative to Chinese manufacturers, free from the security concerns tied to dependence on Chinese supply chains.
But Skydio’s vulnerabilities came into sharp focus days before the U.S. presidential election, when Chinese authorities imposed sanctions and severed the company’s access to essential battery supplies.
Overnight, the San Mateo, Calif.-based Skydio, the largest American maker of drones, scrambled to find new suppliers. The move slowed Skydio’s deliveries to its customers, which include the U.S. military.
“This is an attack on Skydio but it’s also an attack on you,” Adam Bry, the chief executive, told customers. Behind the move was a message from China’s leaders to Donald J. Trump, who would go on to win the election with a promise of new China sanctions and tariffs: Hit us and we’ll strike back harder.
From the campaign trail to his cabinet appointments, Mr. Trump has made it clear that he believes a confrontation with China over trade and technology is inevitable. In the first Trump administration, the Chinese government took mostly symbolic and equivalent measures following U.S. tariffs and trade restrictions. This time, China is poised to escalate its responses, experts say, and could aim aggressive and targeted countermeasures at American companies.
“During Trade War 1.0, Beijing was fairly careful to meet the tariffs that the U.S. put in place,” said Jude Blanchette, a China scholar at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. “Now they are signaling their tolerance for accepting and dishing out pain,” he said. “It’s clear for political reasons that Beijing is not willing to stand by and watch as significant new waves of tariffs come in.”
China has had time to prepare...

What could possibly go wrong?
Add that to the list of things we will have to bite the bullet on until we a free from the Chicoms and every other MFer.
Lenin once is suppose to have said about a century ago “These Capitalists, they will sell us the rope we hang them with”.
Apparently our business/political class has learned nothing
Our military is dependant on China (our enemy) supplying the materials we need.
EVERYTHING wrong with what is happening right now, in one sentence.

I agree with you.
We have transferred large parts of our industry to China and our technology secrets with it. Pure folly.
The only way we can beat China in this upcoming supply chain warfare is that all Western allies solidify even further our business ties and collaboration together.
It is an act of war, but politicians and corporations were dumb enough to make us utterly incapable of taking care of ourselves. Aren’t we proud?
Once again Trump finds out what he needs to know before he does anything. He makes it look easy.
I move to ban the New York Times from this website.
"The competition for this contract was intense, with Skydio, the largest manufacturer of small drones in the United States, competing with its new X10D drone in the final phase. Despite Skydio’s established position and impressive manufacturing capacity of approximately 2,000 drones monthly, Red Cat’s Black Widow system ultimately proved more aligned with the Army’s requirements."
Red Cat Unseats Skydio to Win U.S. Army’s Next-Gen Drone Contract 19 November 2024.
They have learned that they want to be the ones selling rope!
Vietnam, Indonesia, Maylasia, etc. And of course India.
China is not only already left behind but will never again even catch up.
Xi is reasserting a pure communist state that is absent all the capitalistic falderal.
“Build things that require components imported from China.
What could possibly go wrong? “
No American company with Federal contract should be allowed to provision anything that is not 100% American made.
And those companies without such contracts do so at their own risk.
Trade and supply chains are going to be disrupted. Bank on it.
If the idiot Truman had listened to General MacArthur there would never be any problem with China ever!
While the useless idiot he was continued to plink on the piano we have had hundreds of thousands of young men sacrificed on the altar of containment.
We either stop listening to Free Traitors™ and repatriate industry or we become a 3rd world debtor developing nation. ( We may already be there )
So find another supplier.
Australia, Thailand, Vietnam, and soon-to-be ARGENTINA.
This particular thead poster is relentless with his NYTimes propaganda.
Otoh, there's the thinking how it must be known what the left is pushing out to the masses every day.
For me, I just hate having wasted valuable minutes before I realized this drivel was from the NYTimes.
I bet Taiwan and South Korea could figure out how to produce what we need. We need to ween ourselves off of China’s teet anyway.
So what China is saying is for the USA to remove China from it’s supply chain. Okay, got it.
China’s economy is already in big trouble. And that is with Biden throwing them all the business he could. They can’t afford to sanction supply, it will finish them off.
