Past Nominees Have Been Undone by Far Less Than What Surrounds Trump Picks | Back taxes, youthful pot smoking and undocumented nannies scuttled previous presidential choices. Some of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s candidates face bigger questions.

A Supreme Court prospect bowed out after it was revealed that he had smoked pot in his youth. Two candidates for attorney general were done in when it came to light that they had employed undocumented immigrants as nannies. A third cabinet nominee — a former Senate leader no less — was nixed for not paying taxes on a car and driver lent to him by an associate. Even mean tweets were enough to sink one nominee.

The legal and ethical issues surrounding some of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s selections for top administration jobs, not to mention their history of eyebrow-raising public statements, are far more profound than the kinds of revelations that have killed nominations in the Senate in the past.

What once passed as disqualifying for a presidential nominee seems downright benign in comparison to allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use by his attorney general pick detailed in a secret congressional report, a sexual assault accusation followed by a paid settlement for his choice to head the Pentagon and an acknowledged former heroin addiction by the would-be health secretary.

It was not so long ago that nominees for high-level jobs and even some of the more obscure ones had to be above reproach, to the point where a relatively minor tax issue could derail them. But times are evidently changing when it comes to nominations at the dawn of the second Trump administration.

“Standards are apparently evolving,” said Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas and a senior member of the Judiciary Committee. The panel would consider the nomination of former Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, for attorney general if he is formally put forward.

Mr. Gaetz was the subject of a Justice Department investigation and a House Ethics Committee inquiry into drug use and whether...

Unleash the info contained in the secret Congress fund that pays off floozy eruptions with tax dollars.

Then we’ll see about those confirmations.

Gaetz was smeared by a man in Federal prison for trying to extort his family over the smears. The Left and the media (but I repeat myself) have picked up these smears and are running with them. RINO Republicans are of course buying this. Fie on all of those involved.

It would be pretty hard to find someone who hadn’t smoked pot in their youth. I gave that up 25 years ago but I am not trying to hide the fact that I smoked pot in my youth. Pot makes people stupid and lazy but it should not be illegal just as alcohol makes people bad drivers and meth makes people into tweakers. None of it should be illegal and the problems of drugs should be addressed as social issues not legal issues.

Think of all the evil people who are having sleepless nights because they are terrified the Gaetz Man is going to get them. Just the thought of that makes me smile.

What was the NYT’s opinion on Biden’s nomination of Brinton or Levine?

Confirmation of nominated officials by the Senate is really dependent on the makeup of the Senate, who is perceived to have the upper hand (President or Senate), etc.

Historical comparisons make for interesting reading but I would question how predictive they are for future officials being confirmed.

“A Supreme Court prospect bowed out after it was revealed that he had smoked pot in his youth.”

I’m a firm believer that if you are going to make decisions based upon morale standards, then you must be as morale as your standards. And that starts with the people making the selections.

And I hate to spread some bad news but pot is legal in 24 states, 3 territories, and even in D.C. where the people who are going after the candidate are working. And as for smoking pot in youth, if they are under 18 how did the information get out they actually did? Those records are supposed to be sealed.

Mere accusations of impropriety used to ruin political careers in the Republican party. President Trump ended all of that nonsense.

The continued attacks and false accusations hopefully have come to an end. The people are tired of the crap and now any allegation will be looked at as false until proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Why do we even post NYTimes propaganda?

Yeah, I guess we need to view their lies...but as soon as I see it’s from the Times, I immediately exit to find more meaningful news/commentary.
