The Biden Justice Department has decided to go out the way it came in: as a blunt weapon wielded against perceived political enemies.
That, at least, is what the FBI raid against Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan looks like.
At 6 a.m. Wednesday, agents stormed his home to demand his phone and other devices.
Why?
Officially, as part of a criminal probe into the platform for allowing US users to bet on politics via VPN, in contravention of a previous agreement Polymarket made with regulators at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
That’s pretty deep in the weeds for a predawn raid.
Normally, you go to the guy’s lawyers first.
In fact, Justice’s record since 2021 dictates seeing this as straight-up political persecution until proven otherwise.
One big example: Look at how the FBI splashily raided Mar-a-Lago over Trump’s keeping classified documents there, while President Biden’s own, near-identical document crimes met an insanely muted response.
Under Attorney General Merrick Garland, Justice bent over backward to let Hunter Biden walk free, until a heroic judge stopped the rush to give him carte-blanche immunity in an unprecedented plea deal.
Despite Hunter’s endlessly, amply documented nefandous acts: influence peddling, and tax crimes, and gun crimes, and crack, and hookers and on and on and on.
And suddenly the FBI is leaping into action because . . . a betting platform allegedly doesn’t have enough anti-VPN safeguards?

They think that the Gaetz of hell will not prevail against them. Either that or they know they have to do all their evil now in lame duck time...
On the face of it, allowing people to bet via VPN is a pretty obvious problem. A lot of the sports betting platforms work hard to counter tactics to spoof your location. You may not catch 100% of the schemes and techniques, but they do expect you to go beyond due diligence to mitigate it.
However, because this platform was delved much more into political speculating, the conspiracy theorist in my wonders if the feds using that as an excuse because they don’t like being able to access the specific identities of who is betting on who, because they wont a full dossier of data aggregation on EVERYONE’s political activities and proclivities.
Give credit where it’s due, the Democrats excel at wielding government power against their political enemies.
Yes and when Dems win it is time to “work together and reach across the aisle.”
When they win - I have a pen... you lost, John.... elections have consequences.
Re the raid:
Dems had push polls and control of the MSM.
But these were betters. This guy didn’t do anything make any pick or odds but he created a free market and source of actual info.
So via X and then MSM obligated to follow up people saw the true odds.
Dems are mostly - 90% of their voters - lazy and stupid and would prefer to stay home if it will be a loss anyway.
So this is about shutting down information.
“... allowing people to bet via VPN is a pretty obvious problem...”
Not being able to “control” a “created problem” usually means it is a common desire, hurts no one and should not be anyone’s else’s business....certainly not the jack-boot Praetorians of Imperial DC.
Drugs, gaming, whoring, untaxed liquor, etc have existed for 5,000 years and has always been an excuse to “crack down”.

I agree with you in spirit. On a philosophical level, I am against legislating moral vices do a degree (depends on whether you include violence and theft as moral vices, heh).
But if you are the owner of a platform, you can’t afford to buck the tyrants. Did you develop the betting app because you wanted to die on the hill of universal gambling rights, or did you develop it as a business enterprise. I am (pun) betting most enterprises of this sort are being done as business ventures, not liberty crusades.
Time to defund the FBI, they are the greatest threat to the American republic. This crap has got to stop. I can’t believe the azhos are still out there chasing down “JaySixers” after the past four years have proven that those people were right going to the RAT DC swamp and protesting A STOLEN U.S. ELECTION!
There needs to be some way of strengthening OIGs that can investigate the various agencies.
This could be more effective than the AG in routing out corruption.
97% DOJ employees gave to HRC in 2016. The DOJ is a criminal organization. They need to be investigated, prosecuted and completely razed to the ground before they can be rebuilt.
DOJ was created in 1870 to protect civil rights. They’re not some independent agency enshrined by the Constitution.
Pretty sure that raining on my parade is illegal.
Gonna look into this! ;-)
Go with the conspiracy theory by the rotten to the core Doj & fibbies.

I see what you did there and I like it
Polymarket has blocked access to Americans since 2022, following a settlement with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which accused the company of running an unregistered derivatives-trading platform.
On 13 November 2024, the FBI raided Coplan’s home and seized his phone. According to Bloomberg News, the Department of Justice is investigating Polymarket for allegedly allowing U.S.-based gamblers to make bets on the website.
The instructons to circumvent that block are widely available.
