State investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the beloved Instagram famous P'Nut the squirrel.
The DEC is conducting an internal investigation into the controversial raid on Mark Longo's home, where both P'Nut and Fred the raccoon were seized and euthanized.
Despite Longo's claims that officers wore protective gloves, the animals were killed and decapitated for rabies testing after P'Nut allegedly bit an agent's hand.
'An internal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we are reviewing internal policies and procedures to ensure we continue serving this core mission,' a DEC spokesperson told The New York Post on Friday.
State and local health departments, including the DEC, the state Health Department, and the Chemung County Health Department, have been tight-lipped about the rabies test results and the condition of the injured agent.

That would have been reasonable, and we’ve heard rumors that they actually had applications in. But we’ve also heard that they had the squirrel for seven years, and they certainly should have gotten a license for it a long time ago.
What we haven’t heard is much about the person who reported them, or her motives.
Actually, he probably did die via vein...
“Squirrels to not carry rabies.”
Humans would not be in danger.
“Squirrels, mice, and other small rodents have only very rarely been found to have rabies, and have never been known to transmit rabies to humans or other animals.”
'Wildlife officer of the year 2022' Joshua Crain
So he is a number one suckup.
I’m guessing that the execution of P’nut probably gave us at least 100k more votes.
Squirrels don’t get rabbits unless bitten by an animal with rabies. This pet had been isolated for 7 years inside.
If it DID have rabies, it wouldn’t transmit to humans or other animals. All easy info to find online.
These NY government thugs should have done their research before fabricating a lie so easily refuted.
Since a rabies exam requires removal of the head, I'm betting he's in stable condition now.
There was also a raccoon in that house.
Rabies can transfer in many ways. A vet once told me about a woman who was infected by saliva from a rabid animal getting into her eyes; and it lay dormant for many years until it finally killed her.
I’m not making excuses for the way the authorities handled this, but it’s more complicated than some are making it out to be.

A cop is like a box of chocolates.
It will kill your dog.
Now raccoons can and do.
But still if you are handling animals you should be wearing gloves and using proper equipment if you are wearing proper gloves the chances of the animals teeth making contact with your skin to infect you with anything is, once again, so rare as to be statistically zero.
None of this was necessary. It reminds me of that movie A Dog's Way Home where the animal control officer just had a major stick up his... you know.
If the paperwork is not proper, you knock on the door and hand them a ticket. That is it. Why all the drama?
“potential illegal housing of a squirrel and raccoon”
What about all the housing of illegals in NYC? Seems like that would be a FAR bigger concern.
Squirrel murdering communist bastards don’t belong in America!
I sort of doubt that...
A squirrel or a racoon being manhandled by angry shouting strangers are going to exercise their God given right to self defense.
They’re making people FOIL for info, which takes time and costs money.
No rabies results have been reported. They should have been back by now.
And I’m hearing rumors that the word “rabies” never appeared in the paperwork for the search warrant.
He quite literally looks like a dickhead.
