State investigators are probing the circumstances surrounding the death of the beloved Instagram famous P'Nut the squirrel.
The DEC is conducting an internal investigation into the controversial raid on Mark Longo's home, where both P'Nut and Fred the raccoon were seized and euthanized.
Despite Longo's claims that officers wore protective gloves, the animals were killed and decapitated for rabies testing after P'Nut allegedly bit an agent's hand.
'An internal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we are reviewing internal policies and procedures to ensure we continue serving this core mission,' a DEC spokesperson told The New York Post on Friday.
State and local health departments, including the DEC, the state Health Department, and the Chemung County Health Department, have been tight-lipped about the rabies test results and the condition of the injured agent.

What animal control officer handles a wild animal with bare hands? No leather?
No buying it.
The judges name is in the article. But you kind of have to read the article. 😏
There was no rabies concern, until they went to the house and someone got bit.
They went there in the first place because the animals were being kept without a license.
I read it and found the name, even though it is kinda against FR rules to read articles, lol!
Reading the article!?! Unheard of!
First, they came for Peanut . . .
‘We ask that the public keep in mind that [DEC officers] are their friends, family, and neighbors and do not deserve to live in fear for upholding the law,’ the union said.
Good.
a sane and rational bureaucracy would have handled this with a letter
please register your wild animals
if you do not by xx date you will be fined
Giving small people just enough power to feel big....
What is the point of killing the animal to determine if it had rabies? Isn’t there some blood test available? Not buying their excuse.
Hopefully Joshua Crane is running for his life right about now.

I’ve always heard the virus lodges in brain tissue. So to find the virus or not you have to go there.
The stormtrooper animal control officer wouldn’t have been bit if had left the squirrel alone.
You vill zee DEMERITZ! MANY DEMERITZ!!
Bravo. Wish I’d thought of it.
Not going to happen. Won't do it.😏
I wish it was my idea as well. I found it on the web. Indeed very poignant. P’nut didn’t die in vein!
I undertand that. But killing the animal would have done nothing to determine whether or not the agent got it. One of my neighbors when I was a kid had a pet squirrel in a very large cage on her screen porch. One day it bit her, and her doctor then made her take the painful rabies shots as a preventative step. No killing of the animal needed to happen.
Unless the squirrel developed symptoms, that is.
