It’s also free and reduces your carbon footprint. But what makes a city pedestrian-friendly? In 2023, the sustainable living nonprofit organization Smart Growth America released their Foot Traffic Ahead report, which analyzed factors such as how easily residents in America’s largest metro areas can walk from their homes to amenities, the distances between blocks, and access to public transportation. So, lace up some comfortable footwear and explore the most walkable cities in the United States, according to the report.

Walking in most of the listed cities requires an armed guard or pack a .38 or both.

If not then New Orleans from Bywater to Marilyn to the Quarter to CBD and west to Garden Dustruct and Uptown is beautiful interesting flat walking

Except May to October it’s steam room hot

And at night the dark parts are from sketchy to 100% fatal

But def aside from those minor qualifiers arguably America’s best walking honestly

More walkable than Philadelphia?

I've lived in South Philadelphia for 35 years. My wife and two kids walk great distances all the time and have NEVER had a problem. And do you know why? Because they've lived in the city all their lives and know what to look out for.

Some of the clowns on this thread (someone even said they saw a "stripper" on the street) may have been in a city a half a dozen times for less than 24 total hours.

These folks stand out like a sore thumb. My family can spot them half a block away. Heck, sometimes I feel like mugging them and I'm a career LEO.

Folks, just realize that making yourself into an irresistible target, is half on you.

What about Charleston SC? I didn’t get there but it sure looks inviting in pictures.

DC used to be pleasant in spring and fall when I lived there. Especially Georgetown.
