I took a walk near Trump Tower on Wabash last weekend and the vibe is just gone. It’s so sad. Macy’s was depressing, doesn’t feel the same.

Some of the most peaceful times of my life were walking the midtown Manhattan streets at 2 or 3am in the morning during the week.
Beer in a bag, just got off work from Rock Plaza...mostly cabs and cops driving...some bars..I just loved it.
It’s like you have the whole city to yourself.

Never mind the perfect infrastructure. No city is “walkable” minus public safety.
Same here. I can walk around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. Take the bus or L train and be fine. That was probably 10 years ago

Walkable is the ability, then there is the desire to walk these crapholes filled with pot smoke, criminals, and not much else to offer.
You have never walked a REAL city at night. I feel bad...you have missed out.

Reminds me of the nights during my knife fighting and cane fighting practicing period when I would dress like an old man and limp around the alleys at 2 and 3 in the morning looking for field practice, but nothing ever came of it.
It's like good cities paid money to not be on the list in order to keep the riff raff out, and terrible cities paid money for the author to lie about them.
Get back to me in Jan/Feb on how walkable these cities are.
Oh and don’t take a wrong turn because all those cities have really bad parts.
Liberals love to walk. Conservatives love to sit and drive.
I was there around then. Very safe walking most of Midtown in the wee hours.
I’m somewhere to the right of Ronald Reagan... and I like to walk. I also like to drive. But a 10 mile walk around a scenic city on a sunny but mild day? Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it.
