Experiencing a city on foot gives you the freedom to amble from one attraction to another, discovering hidden bars, quirky shops, and lesser-known spots along the way. It’s also free and reduces your carbon footprint. But what makes a city pedestrian-friendly? In 2023, the sustainable living nonprofit organization Smart Growth America released their Foot Traffic Ahead report, which analyzed factors such as how easily residents in America’s largest metro areas can walk from their homes to amenities, the distances between blocks, and access to public transportation. So, lace up some comfortable footwear and explore the most walkable cities in the United States, according to the report.

I took a walk near Trump Tower on Wabash last weekend and the vibe is just gone. It’s so sad. Macy’s was depressing, doesn’t feel the same.

Long time City of Detroit joke.

A desperately depressed man wrote out a suicide note for his family and took a walk at night through Detroit.

Some of the most peaceful times of my life were walking the midtown Manhattan streets at 2 or 3am in the morning during the week.

Beer in a bag, just got off work from Rock Plaza...mostly cabs and cops driving...some bars..I just loved it.

It’s like you have the whole city to yourself.

That was over 15 years ago.

NOW I WOULDN’T. Too many illegals.

What? Phoenix with 31 days over 110° isn’t walkable?

Never mind the perfect infrastructure. No city is “walkable” minus public safety.

Same here. I can walk around 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning. Take the bus or L train and be fine. That was probably 10 years ago

Walkable is the ability, then there is the desire to walk these crapholes filled with pot smoke, criminals, and not much else to offer.

“”””Some of the most peaceful times of my life were walking the midtown Manhattan streets at 2 or 3am in the morning during the week.”””””

Reminds me of the nights during my knife fighting and cane fighting practicing period when I would dress like an old man and limp around the alleys at 2 and 3 in the morning looking for field practice, but nothing ever came of it.

Walking through the cities on the list is just begging to be a crime statistic.

It's like good cities paid money to not be on the list in order to keep the riff raff out, and terrible cities paid money for the author to lie about them.

Get back to me in Jan/Feb on how walkable these cities are.

Oh and don’t take a wrong turn because all those cities have really bad parts.

Liberals love to walk. Conservatives love to sit and drive.

I’m somewhere to the right of Ronald Reagan... and I like to walk. I also like to drive. But a 10 mile walk around a scenic city on a sunny but mild day? Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it.
