Experiencing a city on foot gives you the freedom to amble from one attraction to another, discovering hidden bars, quirky shops, and lesser-known spots along the way. It’s also free and reduces your carbon footprint. But what makes a city pedestrian-friendly? In 2023, the sustainable living nonprofit organization Smart Growth America released their Foot Traffic Ahead report, which analyzed factors such as how easily residents in America’s largest metro areas can walk from their homes to amenities, the distances between blocks, and access to public transportation. So, lace up some comfortable footwear and explore the most walkable cities in the United States, according to the report.

Walking along the waterfront in SF on Herb Caen Way from the Giant’s Stadium to the Ferry Building is such a delight.

Just me, but I do not want to even visit a “major city”
Just prefer rural/ outer suburban areas.

Any list that does not include NOLA or Savannah, GA is not worth the time.

I went to school in Boston. Late ‘60s/early ‘70s. Love to walk the city, day or night. Now, forget it.

You’ll be running, not walking, in these cities while dodging street feces and bullets, and chasing after pickpockets.

6. San Francisco, California With all the feces on the sidewalks, one can walk all right, if one doesn't care where one is a schlepping.

I grew up in a Montana country that had a higher crime rate that NYC. It was usually quiet but when things went down they went sideways. When I was in high school my wresting coach's brother was kidnapped after he left a bar and was tortured for two days before being murdered. 10 years later the bar across the street from my childhood house had a triple homicide. The sheriff deputies all avoided the call and the patrons in the bar tackled the gunman and disarmed him. Only then did our brave deputies show up.

Yeah it is nice now but there are a lot of dead trees that just couldn’t make it, dead ficus and stone pine trees all over the place.

I’ve taken some very nice long walks in San Francisco, but that was over thirty years ago. And I grew up in Portland walking a lot, 10 or 15 miles in a day was not unusual, but that was more like 40 to 50 years ago.
Now those cities are not what they were, and I wouldn’t walk much in either one.

London and Paris were great cities to walk in when I was there in 1973. Still have never been to New York.
To: irishjuggler
I have done the same in NYC many times. I really enjoy walking on the High Line in the afternoon.
