Around the country, Republicans are seeking to rewrite voting registration laws and file lawsuits over noncitizen voting. In Wisconsin, it’s coming down to a fight over the state constitution.
MILWAUKEE — Panic took hold of Roselia Navarro when Donald Trump first campaigned for president on a promise to ramp up deportations. She had been in the United States without legal status since she was 13, and when he won, she worried he could send her to Mexico, separating her from her 3-year-old daughter.
Navarro, who is married to a U.S. citizen, secured U.S. citizenship herself last year. She is excited to vote in a presidential election for the first time — but alarmed Wisconsin’s ballot also includes a proposed state constitutional amendment that would toughen a ban on noncitizen voting. She worries if it passes she could have her right to vote taken away or be forced to go to great lengths to prove she deserves to vote.
Supporters of the measure say it wouldn’t affect citizens like Navarro, but she fears Wisconsin officials, like their counterparts in other states, could start relying on outdated government databases to remove her and other legitimate voters from the rolls.
“It’s very unfair,” said Navarro, 32, who teaches citizenship classes in Milwaukee. “We work hard to be able to vote and have our voice be heard.”
Seven other states, including the swing state of North Carolina, are taking up similar ballot measures, which are part of a broad and concerted Republican effort to stoke fears that hordes of noncitizens will illegally vote for Vice President Kamala Harris and deprive Trump of a return to the White House. Around the country, Republicans are removing people from the voter rolls, filing lawsuits, trying to rewrite voter registration laws and building a framework for legal challenges if...

Most people in the border states know that but not in the interior of the country. They still interpret Mexico and Mexicans as victims like black people; the notion that Mexico and the rest of the remnant Spanish Empire "nations" have cultural and structural reasons why they fail is lost on the fist pumpers of the upper midwest.
But, they're about to find out. The relentless attacks on citizenship will be followed by social collapse like you see in California and to some extent in Arizona and Texas.
Mexicans perceive Americans from a predator viewpoint: they want what you have, and if you let them take it, they will. So removing the barriers to taking what you have will be their sole concern, and they will be rabid about it. In their culture, that's considered normal and acceptable.
Funny to watch the jellyfish caspers of the midwest get rolled by some real jungle operators.
Hey idiot, remember when you naturalized they gave you that beautiful Certificate of Naturalization. That will cover it.
And the media wonders why nobody trust them.

Rare? My behind foot.
She says she works hard for the right to vote but she's NOT wiling to follow the damn rules to make her right to vote legal? Cry me a river Washington Post propagandists.
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
Democracy dies with Democrats.
All 20 million of them. I dunno. I see them all over the place.
This woman is here for years in violation of our laws, thumbing her nose at it and she's only concerned with herself and having to suffer the consequences of her actions. And every American taxpayer is being made to pay for the privilege. A world turned upside down. Regards.
If that were indeed the case that wall would be a hundred feet high and stretch from coast to coast.
If it’s really rare, they should have no objection to measures ensuring that it stays rare without blocking valid votes.
Spot on 2am flights noted.
No bus company is complaining now.
Exactly! Let any ordinary American sneak across the border and into another nation - say, any Arab country, or China, or... - and see how he is treated! Let him violate even only some trivial law, and let's see how quickly their police throw him into the kitty!
Regards,
