Ex-FDA food chief issues 'do not eat warning' over breakfast foods potentially infected with H5N1

A former FDA food safety expert is urging Americans to change their cooking and grocery habits amid a growing bird flu outbreak on US dairy farms.

California recorded its sixth case of bird flu in dairy farmers in just three weeks and 11 more livestock herds have been affected by the virus, bringing the total to 90.

While there have been no official cases of the H5N1 virus infecting people through food, officials could not rule it out in one isolated case in Missouri earlier this year.

In light of this, ex-government food tester Dr Darin Detwiler told DailyMail.com people should begin making some dietary changes.

He said raw eggs pose the biggest risk, so popular breakfast items like soft-boiled eggs, poached eggs, or dishes like eggs Benedict should be avoided all together.

Best to wear a mask when you’re eating.

None of those things contain "Raw" eggs.

And if you cook those things to 135 degrees for thirty seconds, (well below what you would poach an egg at) the virus is killed.

Studies have shown that Pasteurization kills H5N1 in milk; so I don’t see why eggs would be a problem, given the temperatures at which they are normally cooked. (I haven’t heard anyone warning about the risk of H5N1 in chicken itself - as long as you don’t eat it raw...)

I wouldn’t make eggnog or mousse with raw, unpasteurized eggs, but I wouldn’t do that these days regardless of Bird Flu.

we used to make shakes with a raw egg, ice cream, milk and heavy cream- drank if for many years- never had any issues with it as far as we can tell, though maybe some of the ‘colds’ we got were really that we got sick from the raw egg- who knows=-

We even ate raw and under-cooked hamburger while cooking it (scrambled burger) in a fry pan- i won’t do that any longer though- too much ecoli these days-

Amen and Amen!

Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, #5 and #6:

“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. There is no defense. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.”

“A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”

Alinsky was a nasty marxist bastid, but we conservatives can turn what was meant for our harm into good through co-opting his own weapons!
