What happens to those who die and do not believe?
Catholic Answers ^

It depends. If you mean, “What happens to those who die rejecting Christ?” the Church’s answer is uncompromising: They will go to hell.

But no one goes to hell by accident. If someone is simply ignorant of the name of Christ through no fault of his own, there is no sin in that. He has not rejected Christ. Moreover, we know Christ is not constrained by our knowledge. He can work in a heart even when that heart is only dimly aware of it.

Jesus speaks of this in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. The ones judged here are “the nations”—those outside the visible communion of the Church. How are they judged? By the way they responded to Christ when he came to them in disguise. “I was sick and you visited me; hungry, and you fed me; thirsty and you gave me something to drink.” How do the sheep and the goats respond? With surprise.

The point is, we may not know it, but Christ comes to us even when we don’t (or can’t) come to him. This is why the Church counsels us to hope and pray for the dead. We must not pretend we know what God is up to in the lives of others. We know where the Church is. We do not know where it is not.

An interesting take on those who die without knowing Christ.

I don't know if this is official Church doctrine. The Church has many questions that remain open to debate among its theologians, and I get different answers from different priests.

False doctrine.

All humanity is born with the sin of Adam.

For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

All humanity deserves Hell.

Yet God, through His mercy, sent His Son and those who believe in Him shall be saved.

There’s no other mediator. There’s no other grace except the grace of Christ.

Only those who accept Christ are saved.

Also, Catholics err believing in purgatory. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient.

There’s also no mediator between God and man except Christ. We as believers are the priesthood. No need for any other mediator as we have the Holy Spirit in dwelling within us as believers.

Broad is the path to destruction - meaning most will not accept Christ but Jesus tells us that His sheep hear His voice.

If Al Gore dies without believing in Christ, he’ll believe eternally that he was right about global warming.

The Bible talks multiple places about the judgment, which it also makes clear happens after the resurrection.

Hell, in the form of “gehenna”, is reserved for those who have actually fought actively against God after learning His truth (to the point of having received the Holy Spirit) and have thus sided with the devil openly. And Jesus says that both body and soul can be destroyed there (Matthew 10:28).

So a tribe member somewhere in the amazon who’s never heard of Jesus goes to hell??

ROFL

Please tell me that’s not what you meant.

Because that would be terrifying that a person could think that way.

Are they supposed to GUESS there’s a Jesus and GUESS what his entire life was about?

Just wow

It’s hard to die and not believe you’re dead.

“ So a tribe member somewhere in the amazon who’s never heard of Jesus goes to hell??”

Did you read it? No

This thread was brought in so people here have an excuse to hate on the Catholic Church. A regular form of recreation here

It’s one paragraph. Could people at least read it before bashing? Otherwise your bigotry is showing up loud

Seriously—whoever wrote this is biblically illiterate.
Guess they never heard about the millennium-where Christ and his True disciples teach for a thousand years—then Judgement comes at the Great White Throne Judgement—

Just about ALL these posting in the Religion forum ( I know this in General Chat ) are clueless and woefully ignorant of God’s WORD and the correct order of events===

Best line in the statement.

As a general rule we bury those who are dead, whether they believe or not.

We need an excuse?

The anti-Pope does the job all by himself.

Lol.

Sentient, reasonably intelligent adults, intellectually engaged within Western society, who use their free will figuratively to clasp their hands over their ears, and thereby refuse to listen to the living Word of God, are deliberately choosing hell.

It’s really not that difficult to discern which of the two paths you’re on, once you know that a choice must be made.

And every individual must make that choice for himself. The Beatific Vision is not a reward based on merit. But it can be, and is, at long last, achieved.

Philippians 2:12 (Douay Rheims): Wherefore, my dearly beloved, (as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but much more now in my absence,) with fear and trembling work out your salvation.

With God nothing is impossible it’s as simple as that, we are not the judges we are not even on the jury.

We better believe you—because if we don’t we will burn in hell.

That is the ultimate argument from intimidation—the verbal equivalent of a street mugging.

I think it is a pro-Catholic article. Are you just mad that they didn’t post a “Catholic Caucus” tag to suppress opposing views? Don’t get mad, stand up for your beliefs and show through Scripture and reasoning why you believe in your Church.
