The Ground Game: Harris’s Turnout Machine vs. Trump’s Unproven Alliance
The New York Times ^ | Oct. 13, 2024 | Lisa Lerer, Julie Bosman, Kellen Browning, Maya King, Jonathan Weisman

In the final weeks of the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump are staking their chances on two radically different theories of how to win: one tried-and-true, the other untested in modern presidential campaigns.

Ms. Harris’s team is running an expansive version of the type of field operation that has dominated politics for decades, deploying flotillas of paid staff members to organize and turn out every vote they can find. Mr. Trump’s campaign is going after a smaller universe of less frequent voters while relying on well-funded but inexperienced outside groups to reach a broader swath.

Interviews with more than four dozen voters, activists, campaign aides and officials in four pivotal counties — Erie County, Pa., Kenosha County, Wis., Maricopa County, Ariz., and Cobb County, Ga. — reveal a diffuse, at times unwieldy Republican effort that has raised questions from party operatives about effectiveness in the face of the more tightly structured Harris campaign operation. Democrats, in many places, are outpacing Republicans in terms of paid staff and doors knocked, and are counting on that local presence to break through a fractured media environment and to reach voters who want to tune out politics altogether.

“The national discourse kind of falls on deaf ears if it doesn’t feel real and localized,” said Dan Kanninen, the Harris campaign’s battleground states director. “Ultimately you’re trying to have a cohesive conversation with a voter across many modes to connect the dots.”

All told, the number of voters deciding the 2024 election could most likely fit in, and perhaps not even fill, a college football stadium. Across the seven battleground states, where the contests are in a dead heat, every ballot counts.

Dems always get thousands of union workers told to go out to polls to hand out ads after going door to door for weeks.

Trouble this time is fewer are conned into thinking the Dems are still for the “little guy” and “the working people.” Union bosses are for themselves-—the ones not currently in prison for skimming millions of dollars from the coffers.

And 90% or more of school teachers help the Dems. “Children, this picture is of Hitler. He is a bad man like Donald Trump. Go home and make sure your parents vote Democrat to stop him.” “Yes, teacher.” (And that’s a high school senior class.) 😁

Rush Limbaugh spent most of his shows discussing content from NYT, WaPo, LAT, etc. I miss Rush's insight and get bored reading things I agree with all the time, so I post articles that Rush probably would have discussed. Lots of people are interested in them, judging from the number of comments the articles get. Precious snowflakes who claim to be too delicate to be exposed to even their titles sound like they have personal problems they should probably discuss with their therapists.

Someone should provide intel on what the enemy is doing and thinking. I can't remember this level of desperation from the Slimes.

It could be worse. Zeepers actually believe their propaganda.

Yeah, I knew that was going to be your reasoning. It don’t fly with me. For the past few days you have posted nothing but this drivel. We all know the NYT is a propaganda organ for the commies. Maybe try to find something positive to post, sheesh.

The Democrat turnout machine runs on enthusiasm based on political commitment and cash. When the enthusiasm wanes, as in this year, rank and file Democrats working on turnout tend to take the cash and file the expected reports but not do the job of walking precincts and making phone calls. The organizational middle management and higher ups know this, but they also know that their best move is to report that everything is going well so that the cash flows and keeps the machine intact for the next time.

The two issues are (1) How motivated are the Republicans and Independents to vote, and (2) How many fake ballots can the Democrats come up with to try to steel the election.

No matter what the NY Slimes says this is much too personal for each side to worry about strategy
