The Right Age to Stop Drinking Beer According to a Renowned Neurologist
Marca ^ | 11/10/2024

There are several factors to take into account

Who doesn't have a beer, a glass of wine or a glass of spirits every so often? Well, experts warn of the danger of doing so too often, as it can lead to short- and long-term problems for the brain, as revealed by neurologist Dr. Richard Restak in his book 'Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind'.

What can happen to our brains?

Alcohol consumption is an ingrained part of social culture, where bars are the main meeting point and beer, wine or spirits come naturally.

However, alcohol consumption can cause problems for the brain: memory loss, mental deterioration or dementia. Neurologist Dr. Richard Restak warns about this in his book 'Complete Guide to Memory: The Science of Strengthening Your Mind'.

According to this expert, it is essential to stop drinking alcohol before the age of 70, as from the age of 65 the body loses neurons at an accelerated rate, making it necessary to protect those that remain: 'It is essential to do without alcohol at a stage in life when it is crucial to preserve neurons'.

In addition to memory, Restak warns that this can not only affect our brains, but can go further: 'Confrontation, judgement and learning ability can also be affected. This progressive damage can be dangerous for older people'.

Thus, neurologist Restak invites those over 65 who continue to drink alcohol to think about it, as it can lead to long-term health problems, especially in memory and cognitive functioning, and also to make people who do it repeatedly realise that it can be more serious than it seems in the long run.

If I eat food, am a foodaholic?
If I make love to my wife, am I a sex addict?

I’ve also stopped drinking when my glass becomes empty. Seems to have helped.

“I only drink when I’m alone or with somebody...”

I’m of an advanced age such that I only drink with friends...and I’m running out of friends...

There was a W. C. Fields movie, I forget which one, where he and Mae West were in some establishment and he orders brandy. The waiter says, “Certainly, sir. Snifter?”, to which Fields replies, “Snifter? Why, I haven’t even kissed her!”

I’m really surprised he got that one past the Hays Office.

Sobriety is for those that can’t handle drunkedness

True for my wife. Every time she gets drunk I turn into an asshole.

No wishy or washy with you is there? I had 5 beers this year, Last year maybe 2-3. I drank a lot of beer in my 30’s even into my 40’s and 50’s. Usually on bowling nights, or in the hot tub with my lady. Then it is usually wine and bud...the green kind.

I like Cab Sauv. Last year I bought a small bottle, and drank it up. It took me about 2 months to do it. You just drink a little with dinner.... LOVE IT.... Then I retired and now I don’t like to spend the money.

I remodeled my house, from siding, windows to a new deck and railings. I drank about a 12 pack every evening after work doing it, and never even felt drunk. Work and sweat it out, that is the key. My Brother in law was a farmer, wine maker, and made their own barrels. He told me they got up at 4 and worked until breakfast, which was at 8am. It was light and they drank a glass of wine. They worked until it got hot, came home and drank wine and took a nap. They got up about 6pm and went back to work until 10 pm. They took wine like people drink water.

Yep. Physical labor and beer make a great pair. My first beer chugging days were while wheelbarrowing loads of stone for landscaping.
