The former president is holding a rally in a Colorado city he falsely claims was overtaken by violent immigrants from Venezuela. The city’s leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike, tried to pre-emptively fact-check him.
Mike Coffman, the conservative Republican mayor of Aurora, Colo., had a message for former President Donald J. Trump before the Republican nominee for the White House came on Friday to a city he has repeatedly painted as having been taken over by vicious migrant street thugs.
The visit, Mr. Coffman said in a statement to The Times, “is an opportunity to show him and the nation that Aurora is a considerably safe city — not a city overrun by Venezuelan gangs. My public offer to show him our community and meet with our police chief for a briefing still stands.”
It is not a message likely to get through.
In the closing weeks of Mr. Trump’s campaign, his efforts to demonize immigrants, whether they are from Venezuela, Haiti or elsewhere, have gotten ever more lurid — and more impervious to the facts, even those provided by Republican allies such as Mr. Coffman. Last month, the former president began portraying Aurora, a sprawling suburb of Denver, population 404,219, as “a war zone” overrun by a violent Venezuelan street gang, Tren de Aragua.
Despite the entreaties of Aurora city officials in both parties to stay away, Mr. Trump is taking his case to Aurora itself on Friday. He will head there for an afternoon rally at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, a location that is decidedly not overrun by Venezuelan gangs.
He is not welcome, declared Crystal Murillo, a Democratic city councilwoman and a Mexican American.

Aurora, CO residents:
“I picked my son up from school to go to the dentist and there was like six homeless men on the corner in a tent.”
“On my bus ride home and to school, I see drugged up people or people too poor to care from themselves.”
“What I'm actually seeing happening in front of us is not what the media is portraying.”
“...repeatedly painted as having been taken over by vicious migrant street thugs”
The easiest way to score rhetorical points is to articulate the opposition’s views for them.
Exactly!
Strange, I’m just listening to people describing how their little town, Aurora, has been taken over by gangs, illegal aliens etc:
For some time now, the Left and their weak minded minions have sworn that crime and violence have somehow been reduced in America’s cities. And for some time now, weary urban dwellers have been packing their bags and selling their real estate as they move out of America’s crime ridden and violent cities. Funny how that works.
“He is not welcome, declared Crystal Murillo, a Democratic city councilwoman and a Mexican American”
Oh OK! Guess that settles it! Mexico says no Americans allowed here, so pack up and leave, gringo!
New York Times.
Lies, top to bottom.
“The city’s leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike, tried to pre-emptively fact-check him.”
“Fact check” has become code words for “rigging up a deception.”
“Aurora is a considerably safe city — not a city overrun by Venezuelan gangs. My public offer to show him our community and meet with our police chief for a briefing still stands.”
OH! A dog and pony show! And a briefing from the Chief saying everything is A-ok!
Idiots.
Someone I know went to Denver a few months ago, with his wife, who was running in a local race (half-marathon maybe?). Anyway, he said his wife got a shuttle from the hotel to the race site, since she was an entrant. He was planning to walk to the race site, since it was less than 2 miles from the hotel. She called him from the shuttle, said he needed to get an uber or other ride, because it was unsafe for him to walk the 2 miles, due to an expansive homeless community.
Meanwhile the hotels at Tower and Pena, about a mile away as the crow flies, are utterly stuffed with migrants.
NYT warning us about believing our own lying eyes again. Discard.
It’s hard to ‘fact-check’ videos of Venezuelan thugs armed to the teeth in those apartment buildings.
Sure, local government and even the RINOs that be there will be out saying “nothing’s wrong.” It’s their livelihood - they get their money from content and placated citizenry, and to have someone come it and tell it like it is isn’t something they want. The last thing they want is a bunch of reared-up scared taxpayers.
It would be really impressive if. While doing his speech, in back of Trump was a Live feed of driving around the area.
Truly disgusting what they/WE are having to put up with AND pay for!!
The good news?
Today, in Aurora, Colorado, President Donald Trump will announce plans to launch “Operation Aurora” at the federal level to remove illegal migrant members of the dangerous transnational Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TDA).
This gang member removal program will invoke the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to target and dismantle every illegal migrant criminal network operating on American soil, according to a senior Trump official.
The announcement follows a troubling series of criminal incidents involving the TDA gang. Last month, armed men were captured on camera as they forcibly entered an apartment in Aurora, Colorado, threatening the tenant at gunpoint.....
