Certain dietary factors, blood lipids can affect gastroesophageal reflux disease (Cheese helps)
Medical Xpress / HealthDay / European Journal of Nutrition ^ | Oct. 3, 2024 | Elana Gotkine / Xingwu Liu et al

An increase in total cereal intake and total cheese intake may reduce the risk for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), according to a study.

Xingwu Liu, M.D. and colleagues performed a two-step Mendelian randomization analysis to obtain causal estimates of dietary factors and blood lipids on GERD. Independent genetic variants associated with 13 kinds of dietary factors and five kinds of blood lipids were selected as instrumental variables. The summary statistics for GERD included 129,080 cases and 473,524 controls.

The researchers found that genetically predicted total pork intake, total bread intake, total cereal intake, and total cheese intake were associated with GERD risk in the inverse variance weighted analysis. After adjustment for smoking, alcohol consumption, use of calcium channel blockers, body mass index, physical activity levels, and biological sex, a negative association persisted between total cereal intake and total cheese intake with the risk for GERD, but the associations for total pork intake and total bread intake disappeared. There was a negative correlation for the concentration of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) with total cheese intake, with LDL-C mediating 2.27 percent of the association.

"These results showed the significance of dietary factors as well as blood lipids in the prevention of GERD," the authors write. "Therefore, early dietary management and blood lipid control should be carried out to prevent the occurrence of GERD."

Cheese and cereals were found to have an inverse association with GERD.

Other foods initially looked equally helpful, but were ruled out by adjustments.

I am surprised cheese appears to reduce GERD likelihood.

There is nothing like bread and cheese. Especially if the bread is fresh and the cheese is melty. Throw in a nice apple or some grapes and happiness is guaranteed.

100% AGREE!!!

I worry when I go to sleep at night if I’ve had anything with wheat. I try to be religious about cutting out wheat

Stopping wheat was the single biggest factor in improving my health. I lost weight, stopped having heartburn, my stomach deflated like a balloon, and I was no longer hungry all the time.

And don’t bother with most ‘gluten free’ products- most are pretty horrible. The cauliflower crackers and pizza at Aldi’s are pretty good.

Maybe you found better cheese once you got out of the Marines. My tastes have definitely expanded once I tried new cheeses. I probably mostly had sharp cheddar growing up, because that’s what my Dad liked. I always liked Swiss, too, it we didn’t have that often.

It was ‘sharp cheddar’ that changed my mind about cheeses.

Specifically ‘New York Sharp’........

That could be.

I cant believe how many people eat american “cheese” voluntarily.

Then some people say “Well, I like real cheese too. I eat mozzarella and monterey jack all the time.”

There are several hundred other cheeses produced in the US alone and nearly all of them taste better than those two. One is a good way of getting rid of leftovers from producing real cheese and the other isnt good cheese its successful marketing.

Its not like Im some weird expensive cheese snob. Theres some really good stuff being carried at cheap end grocers too these days.
