I think many of us come here for some fellowship with like minded conservative allies and it makes us happy to see that we are not alone.
But, over the years I have noticed something that seems amiss to me, which is the lack of responses to people who have expressed their opinion.
Many is the time that I see a comment to which no one has replied; a situation in which no one responds to a Freeper who has expressed an opinion.
I think most, if not all of us, would likely enjoy an acknowledgement that people have read our comment and agree with it, or even that people have read it and disagree with it! (So that we can have an argument, which is something we contrarians tend to enjoy! :) )
I urge people to respond to comments from other Freepers, especially if that comment is directed at you. I encourage Freepers to acknowledge the people who have posted a message to you, because we all want to believe our opinions matter and are worthy of consideration.
At the very least give them a "+1" (which means "UpVote") to indicate you've read their comment and agree with it. A more thoughtful reply is even better!
Let people know you care what they think and are not indifferent to their existence.
Not only should this boost the amount of traffic on Free Republic, it should encourage a happier more pleasant experience for all participants. It may even lead to more people wanting to join Free Republic!
Which is the way it should be. It's not about taking sides.
Trump is competent. Our current "leadership" is composed of nothing but crooks and idiots.
The fighting should stop, but what of the Crimea? Perhaps independence from both Russia and Ukraine is the answer?
If either side has it, it will still be the bone of contention and the impetus to resume fighting.
But Russia is never going to give up access to that port. It is too critical to them.
?
I try to grab an interesting bit of [a FReeper’s] comment... so that they can be proud someone else thought it was noteworthy... It helps other people get a better inkling what particular [issue] is being discussed.

Excellent suggestion, DiogenesLamp. FReepers get a little teaser on reading the original (full) comment which multiplies the readership of it.
The Russians get to keep the port. But there will be peacekeepers in an independent Crimea. Perhaps from Turkey?
I use a torch. The British kind, not the Frankenstein kind. 😁
Then yours would be a torch song.....
Come sit with me on the porch
While I go searching with my torch.
Never roaming always seeking
Something behind the bush is creeping.
Crickets chirp and an owl hoots
A star across the night sky shoots.
So many things hidden from sight
It's hard to see without a light.
I appreciate your response. I realize we all have our pet peeves/ no-go zones. I wasn’t really surprised by it. I guess I was hoping for better. And I guess, too some may view my lack of faithfulness in posting the past few years sequesters me to the back pew where I shouldn’t speak until I have something nice to say.
That is correct. :)
You’re right n all counts. I guess I was just a little too thin-skinned that night.
It's not your imagination. This forum has changed over the years.
I joined in 2002. Back then, an enormous number of people were active here. Remember, they even organized protests and events.
Yes, we had flame wars and heated debates, and there was some nastiness in those days, too.
But, also, there were many good and decent people here. I'd say most of them moved on sometime between 10 to 12 years ago, and sad to say, many of them passed on.
Any freeper who hasn’t been labelled a troll may not be trying hard enough to offend somebody’s favorite groupthink. I can give lessons for a small fee.
It’s a lot safer to do now than it was during the reign of Dubya the Fraudulent. Just ask wardaddy, who was unafraid to challenge the politically correct amnesty pushers of the GOP.

One of the topics I often find interesting is the evolution of the English language. "Rob's Words" on youtube often offers a fascinating history of it, and this is exactly the sort of topic that he would do a video about if the idea would only occur to him.
But one of the things i've learned about it is that usage eventually sets the rules, and over time "they's" might be considered correct English. :)
I almost always do it, and I think it is a courtesy to the people who might be reading your message later, and wonder what someone said that you might be replying to.
It helps the person for whom your message is intended, and it also helps bystanders who just ran across your message and who are wondering what the conversation is about.
Seems like a tentative start. The Russians might even go for it, because I think they too are shocked at the cost of the war to themselves.
I would speak anyways. I'll be d@mned if I let other people run me off just because they don't like what I have to say!
Besides, I *LIKE* arguments. I think it's a mental disorder or something.
I got on a newer computer and watched it. Very cute.
:)
