I agree with that but I’m not going to push them to
comments on things they don’t want to. And people’s
opinions will vary all over the tundra, plain, waters
and hills. Learn to adapt and let others adapt also.

I joined under a different screen name back in 1999 and was a daily multiple poster. As time went on (and kids came and life challenges increased), my screen time reduced. Over the past 5 years I have been taking care of an aging parent (who since has passed) and, so, my participation has been way, way down (non-existent for stretches at a time).

After the Trump debate, I posted a few thoughts I had about my frustrations with Trump’s rhetorical abilities. I was met with opposition (mostly infantile in nature) by a few Freepers who looked up my posting history and immediately filed me under the name of “troll”. I was struck by the willingness of some to quickly shut down a “seasoned” Freeper and the unwillingness (inability?) to engage in reasonable discussion.

It could well be that this attitude has always been present and, being a daily contributor, I just never noticed it before. That said, it did come across to me in a decline in civility and an inability to engage in reasoned discussion.

One possible problem here. I just posted a vanity asking if anyone could supply the pdf of the immigration bill that Trump reportedly axed.

The responses:

I’m for open borders.

Use Duck Duck Go instead of Google.

Links to possibly irrelevant bullshit.

Tirades about the immigrant crisis.

But no pdfs of the poison pill border bill.

Have we become as silly as the progs? (Hint: that was a rhetorical question, and the answer is in the negative, I hope).

I think wanting affirmation is inherent in people, and it is the same for people here. I think acknowledging people will help Free Republic grow. We should want even the weak people who seek affirmation from people online.

Seriously though, I asked eight people several pertinent questions the other day and only one of them answered. 25 years ago they wouldn't shut up and the threads would go on forever.

Part is, as you say, the demographic has changed as we age out to that great shuffleboard court in the sky. But I also note that too many feel beaten down and near hopeless after the Big Election Steal of 2020 so feel keeping their heads down is the safest way be.

It's not "Safe Republic" - there's plenty of sites for that. I'm betting you can find Liz Cheney and the Turtle on those. Our Founders fully expected literal execution for speaking out, yet went ahead with the odds ten-to-one against succeeding. But because they dared they inspired.

That inspiration was contagious enough to overcome tyranny and establish a better form of government. It's painfully obvious that that government is now in dire trouble and needs it's patriots now more than ever.

So you good people please keep up the good work and never shut up.
