A spokesperson for Mega Millions announced that the price of tickets will soon cost $5 instead of $2, also adding that the starting jackpot will increase from $20 million to $50 million and will continue to grow based on sales.
Additionally, the odds of winning the jackpot will go up from 1 in 302 million to 1 in 290 million.
Every ticket will have a built in “randomly generated multiplier” to increase non-jackpot wins, with multipliers ranging from 2X to 10X, according to the spokesperson.
The new price to play is set to debut sometime in 2025, promising to “bring more value and excitement to players,” said the Mega Millions gaming commission.

Run by government right? Is it right?
Raise price 2.5x. Call it value.
If I won the lottery, I’d be able to afford to play the lottery
They should lower the price to a dollar. Give higher payouts to winning numbers add more ways to win. Bigger profit.
The government is incapable of running a profitable cat house much less a lottery.
Math is hard. And I like those odds. But not for $5 bucks.
Be interesting to see if ticket sales decline noticeably. I can afford to waste 2 bucks but no way in heck am I wasting 5 bucks multiple times a week. I’m more likely to get hit my lightning. Guess I should thank them for helping me stop wasting money !
Who else could raise the price and call it a “value?” In California the lottery when initiated was supposed to get rid of the need to fund schools through taxation. Never happened.
George Carlin had it right: never trust the government for anything.
I’m with you. Powerball only from now on.
Pigs
Gamblers had better odds when the Mafia was running the numbers rackets.
If any of you win, allow me to introduce myself. I’m your long lost, beloved cousin.
$5 is the new $2 in Bidenomics
We’re all cousins at some point. I recall reading ages ago when you get out to the 50 something removed cousin level the entire population of the world is included. So hey cuz. :)
That's the line that I found really interesting. Currently, if you spend $10, you get 5 tickets, each with a 1 in 302 million chance to win the jackpot, so you have a one in 60.4 million chance. After the change, you'll get 2 tickets for your $10, each with a one in 290 million chance, so your chance to win is now one in 145 million.
No, thanks. I buy maybe one Mega Millions ticket a month now (bought one earlier today, in fact), but I won't play it ever again after they "improve" it.
It was either that, or print smaller tickets.
And teachers are still complaining they have to spend their own money on supplies?
Foreign lotteries cost more. but have many more, smaller winners. It’s more of a huge raffle though, as there’s a limited # of tickets.
