NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY

September 27 means we are adding flavor to every meal while cleaning out the fridge, because it's National Corned Beef Hash Day!

#CornedBeefHashDay

Making corned beef hash is a great way to use up leftovers. Corned beef hash became popular during and after World War II. Since rationing limited the availability of fresh meat, corned beef filled the gap. Cooks became creative with herbs, spices, and leftovers. Nothing was wasted. In lean times, stretching a meal became a priority.

The Hormel Company claims it introduced corned beef hash and roast beef hash to the United States as early as 1950. However, World War II reporter, Betty Wason, lists a corned beef hash recipe in her Cooking Without Cans cookbook printed in 1943. Other forms of hash existed as part of the American diet since at least the 19th century. The numerous recipes available before that time also attest to the country's love of the dish as does the existence of many “hash houses” named after the dish.

HOW TO OBSERVE CORNED BEEF HASH DAY Serve up some corned beef hash for breakfast or supper. Either way, you'll be adding flavor to your meal. So, make a lot and invite a crowd. It's the best way to #CelebrateEveryDay!

I have never “understood” Corned Beef Hash. The few times I had it, CBH seemed like an imitation of Imitation meat, aka Spam. Not that there’s
anything wrong with that.
Maybe I never had CBH prepared the right way, vs from a school cafeteria.

Restaurant made CBH with eggs is a favorite when on vacation.

The way I have always had it was canned, fried gently in a pan and flipped as it dries out and forms a crispy crust on the underside to the pan. Eventually becomes fairly dry and crispy. Serve with runny yolk fried egg over the top and perhaps a little hot sauce or Ray Ray’s Yooper sauce.

I vote for national tuna casserole day. After all, the fake modernist church had no right to tell Christians they no longer needed to fast from meat on Fridays. Prayer and fasting are the only way to conquer evil.

I like it, family loves it - as long as it’s homemade, otherwise it’s too salty - the corned beef itself is already incredibly salty.

Have a corned beef left over in the deep freezer, I can use it for that...

Corned beef is good once a year but I’ve only had hash out of a can once and just no to that.

Good homemade or restauarant-made corned beef hash is amazing. I will often go to the deli counter and ask them to cut thick (1/4 inch) slices so I don’t have to cook a whole hunk of corned beef to get my hash fix.

For those who live in Central NJ, Americana Kitchen & Bar in East Windsor makes excellent CBH.

Mrs. L makes an incredible CBH. It’s one of the two ways I’ll actually eat corned beef.

Now you tell me, I already had breakfast. I’ll have this tomorrow.

I like using the little half cans of corned beef hash and fry them until just a little crispy, then I push it to the side of the pan and crack an egg into the clear area. When it is done I make a layer of hash on my plate, add a slice of cheese and then the egg goes on top.

Its a lot of calories but oh so good.

I loved corned beef hash with some fried eggs (easy) on top, some hot sauce, and mash it all up.

Sure, it looks like dog food, but man, it’s tasty.

“Woodstock Inn in the White Mountains of NH.”

We stayed there before kids in the early 80s and loved the place. Is it still good? Hasn’t gotten run-down?

We also loved the Christmas Farm Inn in N. Conway, NH. We had a fiftieth wedding anniversary party there for my folks in 1997. But the prices now! OMG.

Imitation meat, aka Spam.

Spam is literally “SPiced hAM” - SPAM.

It’s not fake meat, or imitation meat.

Woodstock Inn Is still Nice, they keep the place up.
They have added a brewery and expanded the bar/dining room.
Free awesome breakfast for each night stayed.
