Pregnancy triggers vast changes in a woman's body — hormonal, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary and more. And, as a new study reveals, the brain undergoes major changes too, some fleeting and others more enduring.
Researchers said on Monday (Sept 16) they have for the first time mapped the changes that unfold as a woman's brain reorganises in response to pregnancy, based on scans carried out 26 times starting three weeks before conception, through nine months of pregnancy and then two years postpartum.
The study documented a widespread decrease in the volume of cortical grey matter, the wrinkled area that comprises the brain's outermost layer, as well as an increase in the microstructural integrity of white matter located deeper in the brain. Both changes coincided with rising levels of the hormones oestradiol and progesterone.
Grey matter is comprised of the cell bodies of the brain nerve cells. White matter is made up of the bundles of axons — long, thin fibres — of the nerve cells that transmit signals in long-distance connections across the brain.

This still has no significance to the evolutionary arch of millions of years of evolutionary biology.
This is an urban myth that presumes previous generations and cultures were stupid and didn’t realize that early marriage and childbirth were associated with maternal and infant death.
Average age of first marriage for women in colonial America was 20-22. In Tudor England it was 24!
“Determining the average age of conception throughout human history to discover more about humans, then and in the future”
“According to the study, the average age that humans had children throughout the past 250,000 years is 26.9. Fathers were consistently older, at 30.7 years on average, whereas mothers were 23.2 years on average. However, this age gap has shrunk in the past 5,000 years.”
They can only see mutations in surviving children
And only children that reach maturity can have children.
Children born to young mothers are more likely to die. Young mothers are more likely to die.
It’s not a surprise that those who passed on their genes weren’t 16.
Exactly my point.
“”””more typical first pregnancy age of 16 to 22.””””
So far, you appear wrong on that.
Did they define what a woman is before the study?
If so, someone should pass that on to the progressives.
And illustrates my point that early breeding is a poor survival strategy and is actually not the common practice that people seem to believe..
That information matches up with generations of my own family, as well as most families in our community. Through the first half of the 20th century, the women continued to have babies from their early 20's to their 40's.
It would be very interesting to conduct this study on female third year medical school residency students. It is very common for women in medical residency programs to wait until the third year to get pregnant as the academic load decreases substantially during this period.
I would expect the changes to be even more substantial in these subjects.
There is a shift in consciousness during pregnancy that facilitates the changes in biochemistry. Emotional bonding between mother and child is ctlritical for fetal development.
My own research shows that autism and Asperger’s Syndrome are correlated with level of emotional bonding between mother and child during the third month of pregnancy.
It would be interesting to look at specific brain regions rather than just cortical layers and how these differences relate to age and cortical development. The prefrontal cortex, where analytical thought processing is done, does not fully develop until age 25.
This research, while being valuable, is a single subject case study that may not be representative of the genrral population.
My current investigative research involves the effect of the Covid-19 vaccine on increasing a shift similar to the findings in this case study. It is causing changes in the neural links between logical masculine consciousness and emotional feminine consciousness that stabilizes a person’s thinking. This disconnect is the reason that the entire population is becoming more emotional and irrational.
It has to to with amygdala processing vs hippocampal processing in the brain.
This same separation in consciousness is what is causing the decrease in the pumping function of the left ventricle of the heart, associated with Covid-19. It appears to be blocking neural function in the AV node, the HIS fibers and the perkunji fibers carrying the electrical impulses to the right ventricle.
The influence of masculine vs feminine consciousness on the anatomy and physiology fascinates me. Everyone has both to varying degrees. This also influences personality development and gender identity.
