A 12-year-old boy slayed a 200-pound bear to save his father’s life during a family outing gone horribly wrong.
Owen Beierman, 12, shot-and-killed the black bear before it could fatally maul his dad, Ryan, who became pinned under the monstrous beast when shots fired to kill it missed.
‘My left cheek was sliced open and blood was oozing out of the flap. There were two fang marks in my forehead and my face was smattered with blood,’ Ryan told the Star Tribune.
‘The bear was fighting for its life, and I was fighting for mine,’ he continued....
Owen, a regular hunter, was prepared for an event like this, firing off his rifle and killing the bear as it eventually rolled off of his father....

They are until they aren't.
“They are until they aren’t.”
Up in Alaska they say that the Grizzlies will attack you if/when they think you are a threat to their food, and it is best to cover your head and neck and play dead if you can’t reasonably defend yourself.
Black bears mostly attack because they somehow think you are a threat to them, or they are just plain “mean”. And you should fight them as best you can but they probably won’t quit until either you or the bear is dead.
Cougars mostly attack because they mistake you for prey, and if you fight them (even punching them) they will often take off.
I imagine for all three, all bets are off with their cubs are around. This is just advice I’ve heard - and hope I never have to put it to the test. Most of the time they want to stay far away from humans.
“Black bears mostly attack because they somehow think you are a threat to them...”
I just finished reading the article. The father and son were bear hunting and the dad shot and wounded the bear. They then tracked it with the help of a neighbor’s dog. Somehow the dad got too close to the bear to get off any accurate shots, and the wounded bear attacked him.
“The bear was fighting for his life, and I was fighting for mine.” The dad seems to have a pretty clear understanding of things. He also said that was his last time hunting for bear!
Having hunted bears for 50 years.
Having closed in on wounded bears and finished them off. A couple of times at muzzle touching distance.
One needs to be alert and ready to deliver the killing shot.
Fast and accurate.
OMG! Make a political ad with father and son for 2A rights. MAGA fight, fight, fight!
For your files, kind Sir!
Lucky guy and an awesome son!!
A 200 lb black bear is not a large one. I think this must be a mistake. An average male black bear in N.J. is 400 lbs, and can go well over 600 lbs. Females are smaller, but can go over 400 lbs.
I have left wing clients that live in Alaska. They often hike the woods with bear spray. They refuse to carry guns. I’m just waiting for the phone call...”you no longer have clients in Alaska”.
Fangs? Really? Was the bear wearing a cape?
Ping!..............
I once saw a Dracula with really long canines.
There was this mountain lion attack earlier this year. https://www.kuow.org/stories/cougar-attack-washington-state-cyclists
No grizzlies where I roam, and i’ve only seen a couple of black bears which ignored me. I don’t expect to be attacked by a mountain lion, and I’ve never seen one, but if I ever do get attacked by one, I figure it will be by one i didn’t see.
“Gun-toting”!? The kid was armed and armed proper. No surprise at the usual bias from a news outlet from conquered nation of sheep.
“Just after dark, the chocolate Labrador spotted the bear, prompting Ryan to reach for his rifle and fire off eight bullets from a 6-foot range. Unable to get the gun high enough to use its sights, missing all eight shots, the bear then lunged at Ryan, pinning him on his back.”
There’s yer trouble.
Hahahaha! Hilarious, and yes, they DID say ‘fangs’...
Had to go on the throughway yesterday, and when I returned, i got off on my exit, and as I was rounding the corner, I saw a bears head on the railing. I first thought of jfk Jr, then i windered if haitians had arrived, and then wondered if it was real, so I backed up, and sure enough, it was a decapitated bears head, small bear, probably around 150 lb or so. It looked to me like it might been decapitated by a vehicle as the cut looked raggedy.
