Whether you prefer a dry martini or a refreshing gin and tonic, your gin of choice defines the cocktail. If you love gin, you know how it can unfold like a story with each sip: Juniper is the main character, while spices, citrus, and other aromatics play the supporting roles.
We believe there’s a gin for almost any imbiber, even the folks who think they don’t like it. If you’re turned off by assertive, sprucy gins, we have a pick for you that’s smooth and bright. If you like old pine boxes in dusty attics and want to capture that sensory experience in a glass, we have a gin for you, too.
Food and drinks writer (and Wirecutter contributor) Tammie Teclemariam and I tasted 12 gins in all. To find the best ones to suit many tastes and budgets, we focused mainly on London Dry gins because they are the most widely available and the easiest to compare (thanks to a standardized distillation process). And we included a couple of bottles that we believe are true all-purpose gins, meaning they mix exceptionally well into three of the most common gin cocktails: a dry martini, a gin and tonic, and a Negroni.

If I was going to have a martini years ago I would have a Bombay Sapphire.
Sapphire was too flowery for me. Gordon’s was my go to.
I can’t remember which one was grapefruit flavored
Beef eatets
You’re a Martini person?
Gunpowder Irish Gin is nice if you like citrus.
Bombay Sapphire was like drinking a shot of perfume.
The correct answer is: A free one
Just like it is with beer
I’ll probably go with whichever one Hillary imbibes.
Personally I think most gins taste like fuel oil, but Tanqueray is drinkable.
I was into G&T a couple of years ago. Did a quick gin tasting and settled on Beefeater.
Then found that it was better to make my own with cheap vodka and juniper berries and some other things.
I was never really a gin person until recently, being more of a scotch and rye fan. My youngest daughter liked gin and tonics. She introduced me to a Japanese Gin called Roku. I was to say the least pleasantly suprised.
Hard to beat gin and root beer with a twist of lemon.
None?, vial stuff.
Tanqueray
^^^ This, when I was a drinker over thirty years ago. T&Ts for me.
Will we ever get to rum? Just wondering.
My old boatin’ buddy, Trav, swore by Boodles. :/
I will post a rum article next
For martinis I like Hendrick The cucumber and rose is really nice. I use Bombay Sapphire when u want to be cheap for martinis and gin & tonic. My preferred all purpose gin including sipping is Plymouth regular strength. St George has 3 nice gins as does Uncle Vals (like 2 of the 3. Pass on peppered).
I was at a social function last fall. Three women in the bar line ahead of me. One ordered a Hendricks. One ordered a Bombay. One ordered a Beefeater. I ordered a Tanqueray and then criticized all of their choices to their faces.
