‘Learned the hard way’: American Airlines customer books 2 flights separately to save money. Does it work?

They say we should catch flights and not feelings—but whoever said that probably doesn’t realize how expensive airline tickets actually are. In a clip that has amassed 1.1 million views, TikToker Mandi (@mandi_martinez11) filmed herself booking two sets of flights on the American Airlines website: One as a round-trip, and the other as two separate tickets.

She accompanied the video with a caption that read: “POV: You learned that booking flights separately is cheaper than booking them together.” And as the subtitle implies, that’s exactly what her TikTok shows.

IIRC, when I tried that for reasons that escape me, the two one way flights were more expensive than a round trip, and i did not get a choice of the non stop flight the round trip did.

An airline employee friend told me about a scheme, probably banned now. Buy a cheap coach supersaver seat. Then buy the seats on either side as fully refundable coach (much more expensive). At the last possible minute per the refund rules, cancel them for a full refund. Unless there’s a lot of standbys, you might get your own row.

You have to consider many options to find the best fare. I booked flights departing 100-miles away to save $600. One-way frequent flier tickets can be a deal with a paid return. When I was working in Afghanistan I discovered RT from Dubai or Delhi was around $400 less than starting in the states and included a free second U.S.A. city. I could go on and on…

I found cheaper tickets to Manchester England with a stop in Dublin cheaper than a flight to Dublin. So I purchased the flight to Manchester and got off in Dublin. (No checked luggage)

I often purchase my tickets at the foreign affiliated website rather than the US airlines. For example, I purchase tickets to Asia on Korean Air and end up on Delta Flights as they are affiliated.

I puchase my Delta tickets to Europe on the KLM website. They have been much cheaper and I’m on the same plane.

Back before they folded, I bought Air Berlin tickets to Germany instead of American Airlines. Rode on and AA plane and got AA frequent flyer mileage. Saved a few bucks - not an economically significant amount but enough to feel I’d put one over on the man.

Do you know if you can use Delta’s Freqent Flier miles on KLM? I know it depends on the flight but I’m wondering if I could do better using my miles that way.

I’ve often heard a traveler booking a flight. let’s say to Los Angeles but they really want to go to Denver.

The flight to Denver is much more expensive than the flight to Los Angeles. But the flight to Los Angeles has a layover in Denver so the traveler books the trip to LA but gets off in Denver and saves money.

I think you must book through Delta to use their miles.

Back before the internet, agents knew a lot of angles to get lower fares.
But, if the airlines figured it out they would send the agency a debit memo for the difference, so the agency would lose money.

Travel Agents made 10% commission on domestic flights, a debit memo was for the entire price of the ticket, making the debit memo usually 10 times the commission that was made in the sale of the ticket

One of the biggest tricks to get a lower price for frequent flyers was what was termed the inside out ticket

Lower priced tickets usually required a over Saturday night stay, if a business traveler was going to the same city twice, you could book both tickets with over Saturday night stays and save sometimes hundreds of dollars for the traveler

Half of ticket one would be combined with half of ticket two and the remaining halves would be combined for a second round trip ticket making both trips meet the over Saturday night requirement

Booking on foreign sites/travel agents also works for hotels, I was able yo get two cheap fares from Paris to Madrid on a Columbian airliner as well as two low priced/centrally located rooms in Madrid by using a Spanish booking company.

This was much lower than any US site.

Very often I booked hotels online while standing in their lobby. It’s much cheaper.

I’ve flown those cheap local airlines. I draw the limit when they have duct tape on the broken window.

I used to fly Ryan Air quite a bit. The discount flights were cheaper than a taxi ride. I remember flying Dublin to Berlin for 10 Euro. You felt like cattle as they herded you across the tarmac and up a set of steps into the plane. No assigned seats, just pile in.

Prior to the internet, the town welcome station was the booking agent for rooms at B&B’s all across Europe. They would have pictures of the home and room. They would use a landline to the home to arrange the room for you.

I enjoyed staying with and meeting the locals when I traveled. Made for some strange and unusual experiences.

I booked a flight 3 hours away in Toronto saving $4K on a business class ticket. Flying half way around the world in coach really sucks.

What about your bags that are checked to LA?
