Hamburger vs. Hot Dog: Which Is Healthier?
Better Report ^ | 09/07/2024

Posted on 09/07/2024 7:05:21 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

It’s summer, which means beach getaways, frozen cocktails, and bad sunburns in the most annoying of places. It’s also the perfect time to hold a backyard barbecue and eat enough hamburgers and hot dogs to make Joey Chestnut proud.

Burgers and Hotdogs are two of the tastiest summertime staples, though they’re not exactly considered to be the most diet-friendly foods. But rather than compare hamburgers and hot dogs to salad, let’s compare them to each other. You may not realize there are certain dietary benefits that one offers over the other, so let’s take a closer look at which is healthier.

Comparing the Classics

There are so many types of hamburgers and hot dogs to choose from, from the standard beef-based versions to ones made of turkey, lamb, and plant-based ingredients. But for this comparison, let’s take a look at the stereotypical burgers and dogs that you often find at backyard barbecues. We’re talking about a 4-ounce hamburger made from 85% lean, 15% fat ground beef versus a traditional 1.5-ounce, bun-length, all-beef hot dog.

We liked to have one of each when the grill was involved.

And didn’t care about comparing their healthiness or lack thereof.

I usually have one of each. Dog with chilli and burger with just mustard and ketchup.

Lots obvious here.
Basics?
You control what your “hamburger” is made of.
You eat whatever is in the “hot dog”.

If you don’t know where the meat is from and there are no bones, chances are you’re eating lab grown cancer cells. You are what you eat!

I’ve had a number of UC nutritional experts tell me to not eat hotdogs because one really doesn’t know what meat by products are in them. So now I only eat one per sitting instead of two.

I get the entertaining question, but from a nutritional & health standpoint the article is moronic, for obvious reasons.

I will have a hamburger or some hot dogs maybe once a month. All things in moderation, and that’s how I eat what I please. That has worked for me. I am 67, my bloodwork and blood pressure are good, and I take no medications.

Since you probably pay about $30 a pound for the actual muscle meat content in your Hot Dog I would rather have it in the form of steak.

There is a range of quality in each. A good burger or hot dog beats a poor one of the opposite. Beyond the meat and toppings the bun can make or break the serving.

Yeah, it's not just the beef, it's also the condiments.

Hamburger: Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Pickles, and Ketchup

Cheeseburger: Lettuce, Tomato, Onions, Pickles, and Ketchup

Hot Dog: Sauerkraut, mustard

Not a fan of relish on either hot dogs or hamburgers but some people like it.

Of course, there's the Italian Hot Dog: Potatoes, Onions, Mustard, and Ketchup, and possibly Oregano, Basil, and/or Rosemary

God please STFU. When the choice is burger or dog, you get the one you -want- at the moment. That’s it....

Who in the world puts ketchup on their hotdog?! Mustard, relish and onions are the only things I put on a regular hotdog. On a chili dog I only add shredded cheese and onions. But ketchup?! Never!!!
