Death Of the Consumer Economy: Over A Third of U.S. Adults Now Struggle to Pay for Their Most Basic Expenses
New American Prophet ^ | September 7, 2024 | Michael Snyder

When U.S. consumers are doing well, the U.S. economy does well. But of course the opposite is also true. When U.S. consumers are not doing well, the U.S. economy really suffers. The government has been trying really hard to put a happy face on things, but the truth is that the standard of living for most U.S. consumers has been going down for a long time. The cost of living has been rising faster than paychecks have, and so most of us have less discretionary income than we once did. And that is really bad news for the U.S. economy, because as the official White House website has pointed out, consumer spending typically accounts for about two-thirds of all economic activity…

Consumption spending makes up two-thirds of the U.S. economy on average, so as the U.S. consumer goes, so goes the U.S. economy.

The neighbor has been a widow for nearly 6 months and Social Security still hasn’t begun the monthly widow benefits. I heard from someone else it is taking up to 9 months. In this age of merely clicking a computer button, that is not acceptable. And it is going to be a piddly $1000/mo. for a lifetime of working for the government. Guess checks to illegals is the priority.

“has been going down for a long time”
Yes, 3 1/2 years of insane economic policy does seem like a long time.

One thing that is out of control is my ol' soapbox, property tax. It legally rises 10% each year. Our income has never risen 10% in any year. No eating out, no movies, not even Walmart clearance clothes since 2010 and the last vacation was 2010 but that was more of a have to thing. All for squeezing every dime for the taxes. Thanks to the CA invasion sending home prices skyrocketing.

It’s the private sector that is struggling. Government workers are doing just fine.

Yeah, everyone knows the economy is teetering, and it is not surprising that bankruptcies are up.

But just over a third of Americans surveyed reporting that they are having some difficulty paying bills is only relevant in a series that shows previous such numbers.

Grocery costs up around $200/mo over 2019, fuel costs up around the same, health insurance up around $150, utilities up around $150, Car insurance doubled, homeowners insurance up $4,000 per year. Over the last three years, my basic monthly costs have increase around $1,500 per month. That used to be my cushion; my savings for home maintenance, clothing, lunches with friends, and travel. No more.

A better title for the article would be: The deliberate destruction of the middle class in America.

This should serve as a message to the younger folks out there: You CANNOT plan on living on social security. You have to save some money for your old age. I know that its tough, but the government isn’t going to save you.

If I’m not mistaken delayed benefits can be recovered at a later date. Please have the widow check into that so that when she does start receiving her benefits, she gets back pay for the months she didn’t

It took 6 months for daughter to receive her mom’s last paycheck. Mom passed away on Dec 8. SS immediately stopped deposit of her monthly check. Daughter filled out form at SS office to claim the money as sole beneficiary. 6 months later she received the money. Stopping payment was lightening quick. Paying out was slower than molasses.

Government workers are doing just fine.

And as long as the government can continue to borrow against our kids' future income, they will continue to do well.

Shrink flation. The wife got a box of donuts yesterday at good 'ol price chopping walmart. The count went from 12 to 8 and the price went from 3.95 to 4.24.

That is a 50% price increase in the count alone!

Try to tell me and prove there is no greed involved there. Just try.

It is even worse than that. Sales tax has not only gone up in lock step with inflation it has also gone up by 300% in real inflation adjusted dollars.

Back in the day it was 3% and now it is mostly 3X higher. The other day we shopped in a nearby town where the sales tax is 11.4%. That is nearly 4X the 3% we paid when I was a kid.
