Major American retailer announces it will no longer sell cigarettes

Stop & Shop will stop selling cigarettes and vapes this week as part of its dramatic commitment to 'community wellness'.

The American retailer will remove tobacco products from all 360 of its stores across the northeast from August 31.

The decision has been embraced by the American Cancer Society and health organizations.

The announcement follows the lead of CVS, Target and Walmart.

'From our team of registered dietitians that serve our customers at no cost to our trained and trusted pharmacy associates, Stop & Shop aims to support the health and well-being of the neighborhoods we serve — and this exit from tobacco is one more way we’re accomplishing that goal,' Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid said in a statement.

Stop & Shop is yet to reveal whether the products were still being sold in high volume.

Last month, the retailer announced it was closing 32 'underperforming' stores across five states; Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

While the number of smokers has gradually decreased globally over the last 25 years, there are still 1.6million in America.

Many have previously slammed retailers for pulling away from the products and have criticized local politicians for encouraging diminished sales while nurturing a budding marijuana industry.

its dramatic commitment to 'community wellness'.

Nothing is a greater threat to "community wellness" than the commie Democrats and their woke agenda.

Just curious, not a scientific pol. Would you rate that threat higher or lower than Islam? I have previously voted but I would be interested to know your stance?

The youth are vapping by a huge amount. They don’t seem interested in smoking cigarettes. People will find other avenues to smoke. Marajuana is going up and will continue.

Walmart ? Uh, no.

The cigarette aisle is the only register manned continuously from opening to closing by a human at WalMart.

The American tobacco industry only survives the anti-smoking movement by selling its products overseas.

Yes, Democrats are a greater threat to the USA than Islam.

Without the betrayal from the Democrats here in the USA, Islam would not be a threat inside the USA.

Neither would the 15 Million illegal alien criminals brought in by Biden/Harris. But they are; and they're here now.

My father started smoking when he was in the US Marines during WW2 at age 18.

He smoked a pack or two a day until age 75 - which is when he had a
quad bypass. He didn’t smoke anymore after that.

He did however remarkably, live to be 89 - couple months shy of 90.
But that last decade with COPD (cardio obstructive pulmonary disease - breathing is very difficult.) was pretty tough.

In the military, Uncle Sam bought the smokes way back then, but you knew that, right?

I will ague the reason is that the cost of sales exceeds the margin that is the profit.

There are likely more profitable products to accommodate the space taken by the tobacco

I read all these horror stories and statistics about smoking. You’d think that people are dropping like flies with piles of corpses everywhere with black tar oozing from their mouths. In my 75 years I have personally known only maybe 3 people to die of lung cancer. One never smoked once in her life. I find this interesting.

No one I know died of covid either. Most people who died that I know of died of old age. And cars. Cars may be the greatest danger of all. Certainly they top cigarettes. Maybe Walmart should shut down it’s gas stations.
