Boy accidentally smashes 3,500-year-old jar on museum visit

A 3,500-year-old jar has been accidentally smashed into pieces by a four-year-old boy during a trip to a museum in Israel.

The Hecht Museum in Haifa told the BBC the crockery dated back to the Bronze Age between 2200 and 1500BC - and was a rare artefact because it was so intact.

It had been on display near the entrance of the museum without glass, as the museum believes there is "special charm" in showing archaeological finds "without obstructions".

The jar was most likely originally intended to be used to carry local supplies, such as wine and olive oil. It predates the time of the Biblical King David and King Solomon and is characteristic of the Canaan region on the eastern Mediterranean coast.

C’mon, man. Those things are a dime a dozen.

Stay tuned...

"The Hecht Museum said the child has been invited back to the exhibition with his family for an organised tour after the incident happened a few days ago."

Meh, if they have all the pieces, they can just glue it back together. Museums do that sort of thing all the time.

Exactky. The patina will add value. The kid,can autograph it for future generations.

"perhaps even the boy himself was an anti-semite."

He was offered a 4-year ride at Columbia University

For those keeping score, that date range would put it sometime from the traditional dates of Noah to Jacob.

They need to fire the idiotic museum director.

A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.

Fail.

"Celebrating the kid by having him back like he’s some kind of hero is just stupid."

Matthew 19:14 reads: “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven"

The boy’s father, Alex, said his son “pulled the jar slightly” because he was “curious about what was inside”, causing it to fall.
...........................................

Why did the father allow the son to run up and touch it in the first place??? Then after it’s broken the father’s first thought was that some other kid did it?? Then the museum invites them back???? The whole thing is ridiculous.

I hope it’s not “You break it, you bought it.”

That’s kind of what I was wondering too. 😀

Honestly don’t understand why parents take children that young to venues where they get will nothing meaningful by attending. Only cause potential problems for others.

See this all too. Couples often pushing strollers through a crowded gun show isle. Or, taking loud, unruly children to expensive restaurants.

We had a kid like that. Had to touch everything.
That is why, when we went anywhere, one of us always had our hands on him.
I tried a leash but he would just lay down on the floor and refuse to walk.
Dragging him with the leash was frowned upon.

Sounds like the dad was watching the kid.

He should have taught him what *Don’t touch it. It’s not yours* instead of letting his precocious little darling handle whatever he wants.

Kids need to learn that the whole world is not theirs to manhandle.

They have experts who can put it together, somewhat.

It’s an imperfect world, things get broken. Bad? Sort of but it was just a thing, not a living being or a soul.

Plus why put a rare vase like that out in the open and not behind some glass enclosure?
