Plan Beats No Plan
The New York Times ^ | Aug. 24, 2024, 7:00 a.m. ET | Binyamin Appelbaum

This isn’t a policy election. There’s no defining issue like tax cuts in 2000 or health care in 2008 or trade in 2016. Democrats are focused on convincing voters that Donald Trump poses an existential threat to the American way of life, and vice versa. But policy remains the purpose of politics, and the choice of a president is also the choice of a housing policy.

Kamala Harris has a plan to address the nation’s housing crisis. Donald Trump (kind of) has one, too. And the differences say a lot about the two candidates.

Housing prices across the country have soared in recent years, dramatically outpacing income growth. Finding an affordable place to live is no longer a problem confined to a few big coastal cities. Millions of Americans cannot buy a place to call home. They cannot settle into a neighborhood, or move to a new city to take a better job.

The cause of the crisis is a shortage of housing. The solution is to build a lot more housing.

Ms. Harris is cleareyed about this need. She has proposed a target of three million new homes, and outlined a number of policies to move toward that goal, including tax incentives for builders, financial support for buyers and a necessary focus on opening land for development by removing state and local regulatory roadblocks.

Mr. Trump also talks about the high cost of housing, but ironically for a man who sees himself as a great builder, the former president hasn’t called for more construction. Instead, in his telling, the housing crisis is just one more problem caused by illegal immigration — one more problem to be fixed with mass deportations.

This is what wall-to-wall Astroturf, gaslight, projection and lies looks like.

Any resemblance to reality is strictly coincidental.

It is impossible to take these people seriously anymore.

President Donald John Trump has driven them completely out of their minds.

Everyone makes and keeps more money, things stop going up a lot in price. That sounds like a decent plan to me.

How is Kamala going to build 3 million new houses?

Aren’t planning and zoning and housing decisions made by local cities and governments? Does the federal government have any significant role in any of this now?

when you allow 11 million people to invade the country, there will be a housing crisis.

“ This isn’t a policy election. There’s no defining issue like tax cuts in 2000 or health care in 2008 or trade in 2016”

Binny means this isn’t a policy campaign. Meaning Kamala’s.

Trump has policies in his campaign. The border, ending foreign war involvement to name couple. Now with a working, successful, political Kennedy ex democrat on board with health policies, the writer did not find it worthwhile to listen to him, there are more policies to follow, Kamala ought to accept an interview and or a debate

The government that governs least governs the best. In any situation doing nothing is always an option, and sometimes the best option.

A statement is not a plan you supposedly educated ignoramus, Binyamin Appelbaum. Meanwhile Trump has a record of delivering on what he says. When unsuccessful, on some promises, he still tried but was thwarted by both parties in delivering his promise.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris has delivered nothing, nada, and what she has promised will bring only more misery. She has no plan art all, only statements. Statements that people do not believe, even you, you lying scumbag propagandist.

The most amazing thing to me is that Trump has already been president for 4 years. He didn’t tank the economy. He didn’t start any wars. He didn’t put people in camps. He didn’t make homosexuality illegal. It was not a dystopian nightmare.

But here we are, and (apparently) the media has convinced some people that President Trump would be the end of the world.

Just so. I dont read the articles but I see the headlines here in FR. Each and every day the NYT is working over time to pump out anti-Trump/ pro Harris, propaganda. unendingly, one after the other. It really is quite extraordinary, even by the standards of the whores who make up the media

“””””Democrats are focused on convincing voters that Donald Trump poses an existential threat to the American way of life”””””

That rhetoric had Trump being shot only weeks ago and a manhunt only ended 2 days ago of another potential assassin, the media lacks self awareness.

The price of houses isn't rising.

The value of what we are using for money keeps falling. Has done for a long time.

It’s not government’s job to build houses.

Get out of the market’s way and let the market handle it.
